Yue Kiln Sites of Shanglin Lake well protected

Recently, the "Shanglin Villa" and its subsidiary buildings, as another group of unauthorized buildings, were finally removed from the area of the Yue Kiln Sites of Shanglin Lake, a key cultural relics site under the state protection. Since August 2016, Cixi County has accelerated its protection program of the kiln sites. Over the past half year, 44 unauthorized buildings were demolished and over 7,000 tombs were moved to other places.

Since 1957, after some inspections, the provincial Cultural Relics Administration Commission and the Forbidden City Museum discovered dozens of ancient kilns at the Shanglin Lake area. On January 13, 1988, the State Council listed the Yue Kiln Sites of Shanglin Lake as one of the third group of key cultural relics sites under the state protection, with the total area of eight square kilometers (including some water area). However, the area hasn't been well improved since then. Last year, as Shanglin Lake was identified as one of the four spots for the "marine silk road" in Ningbo, Cixi County decided to give priority to the protection of the area and issued the "protection and treatment plans for the Yue Kiln Sites of Shanglin Lake".

Tomb moving is an important part of the protection program. As is reported, 18 towns or streets were involved in the job with a total of 7424 tombs to be moved. The county chose six relocation spots for the tombs and three different ways for the people concerned to choose from. The registration work was completed in October last year, and the relocation agreement signing work was completed in November. In January this year, the tomb relocation job was finished smoothly.

Besides the tomb relocation and removing of the unauthorized buildings, the construction work is well under way. For example, the tour trail leading to the Lotus Kiln Site is now under construction, the sheltering sheds for two kiln sites are being added, and the exhibition hall for the Yue Kiln Sites will soon be completed with the interior decoration and exhibitions.
