
The Fundaci n i2CAT presents the results of the FIBRE project developed between the EU and Brazil Ante el reto que supone un mayor uso de la Red para distribuci n de contenidos audiovisuales que ocupan gran ancho de banda, la eclosi n de los servicios en nube y el big data, este proyecto intenta sentar la bases de lo que ser Internet en el futuro.
La I2CAT Foundation ha presentado los resultados del proyecto conjunto entre la Uni n Europea y Brasil FIBRE, que pretende la creaci n de una infraestructura de experimentaci n de Internet del Futuro para la investigaci n sobre estructuras de redes y aplicaciones distribuidas.
Con un presupuesto de casi 3 millones de euros, este proyecto, liderado por la Fundaci n i2CAT, est financiado por el gobierno de Brasil y por la Comisi n Europea (dentro del 7 Programa Marco) y se ha concebido para dise ar, implementar y validar una infraestructura compartida entre ambos territorios para la experimentaci n de Internet del Futuro a disposici n de los investigadores europeos y brasile os.
Dirigida tanto a la industria como a los investigadores, el aula m ster de la Universidad Polit cnica de Catalu a acogi ayer, martes 5 de noviembre, una jornada sobre el proyecto, en la que se mostraron los principales resultados conseguidos en el proyecto as como demostraciones de la tecnolog a.
De entre los logros del proyecto, que finalizar en 2014, destaca la construcci n de una gran red de conmutadores (switches) OpenFlow de Europa a Brasil, esencial para la experimentaci n en Internet del Futuro, ya que la investigaci n en este mbito necesita entornos flexibles a gran escala que soporten virtualizaci n de los recursos y permitan nuevos algoritmos de control y encaminamiento.
Sebasti Sallent, director de la Fundaci n i2CAT, destac durante el evento que la Internet del Futuro ser SDN, un nuevo paradigma para las redes de comunicaciones que nos permitir n crear nuevos tipos de aplicaciones, tecnolog as y modelos de negocio, as como escalar los dispositivos y servicios existentes y optimizarlos .
La jornada tambi n cont con la presencia de Javier Ben tez, Senior Network Architect de Colt, que incidi en la importancia de disponer de testbeds a gran escala, como FIBRE, para poder llevar a cabo pruebas de concepto y prototipos y recopilar los datos resultantes , ya que la empresa dispone de un laboratorio pero no un testbed (plataforma de experimentaci n) a escala global.
Por su parte, V ctor L pez, especialista en tecnolog a de Telef nica I+D, a adi que el SDN es clave para la gesti n de las redes de Telef nica, pues nos permite focalizar el problema desplegando controladores software que resuelvan necesidades concretas sobre la gran red de que disponemos y controlamos, con millones de usuarios y multitud de equipos (hardware) diferentes . Por este motivo, considera que la existencia de testbeds como FIBRE facilita el desarrollo de esta tecnolog a que ellos ven tan interesante.
SDN y OpenFlow
FIBRE se basa en el concepto SDN (Software Defined Networking), que aporta una capa de software por encima del hardware de red, habilitando as que sean los desarrolladores de software los que puedan controlar la red. De este modo, se consigue mucho m s control y flexibilidad, permitiendo que los administradores modifiquen el estado y el comportamiento de la red sin necesidad de acceder f sicamente a los dispositivos.
En cuanto al concepto de OpenFlow, se trata de un protocolo de comunicaci n entre dispositivos de red que permite habilitar el SDN sobre una red dada, facilitando de este modo el control de la red a trav s de software.
Tras este nuevo concepto de infraestructura que proporciona FIBRE se encuentran empresas de primer nivel como Google, Facebook, Cisco, Goldman Sachs, IBM, Microsoft, Intel, Hitachi, Fujitsu, Ericsson, HP, Telef nica, Deutsche Telekom, Yahoo o VMWare, entre otras.
