Those 30-minutes opening show, gorgeous stage, novel AR production effects, and multi-camera special shooting has brought us an unusual TV experience of LOL S10 World Championship final which just concluded. Now it's time to explore the differences from the perspective of broadcasting technology.

Special Equipment

This time the LOL S10 World Finals boldly tried a new production method combining film and TV for the first time. Unlike previous TV productions, a large number of special equipment that used to adopt in movie production has been included, two 50-feet jibs, two movie rail carts, two 5-meter remote control telescopic towers, all of these brought a more different visual experience to the LOL S10 World Finals.

In the innovative process of using film shooting equipment to produce traditional TV programs, the Ultra Load-bearing Remote Control Rail Car independently developed by SMT was successfully used in large-scale events for the first time.

Due to the structure of the stage, two remote-controlled orbital robots capable of raising 5 meters are required, which became a dilemma for safety and effectiveness. After analyzing customers' needs and clarifying technical requirements, the R&D team of the SMT Broadcasting Department formulated feasible plans. Within two months, completed the self-developed Ultra load-bearing remote-controlled rail cart with a maximum load of 1000 kg, which can be linearly and wirelessly controlled, physical and optical limit, meanwhile maintaining a good stability.

Radio Frequency Resource Management

From the beginning of August when the competition requirements were received, data were collected from various departments that needed to use radio frequency resources and then proceeded summary and declaration. Shanghai Radio Administration Bureau (SRAB) together with SMT OB Van wireless microwave team began a survey of the wireless background on site.

After nearly a month of coordinating with SRAB and consulting with equipment manufacturers for specific parameters, SRAB finally gave a temporary permission to use the wireless frequency for this competition.

The audio team Techsound has a wealth experience in SHURE wireless microphones and ear-return equipment, regardless of the antenna location, the microphone preparation to prevent intermodulation interference.

The RIEDEL system is used for the intercom, and the BOLERO bodypack is used for the mobile full-duplex call, which simplifies frequency management. As long as the operation team arranges a reasonable antenna location, positive results can be achieved. SMT and technical personnel of SRAB studied the signal characteristics of BOLERO products, tested 30 points marked on the spot, and recorded the sideband interference caused by the equipment carrier and the adjacent mobile phone network. It has been proved that as long as the level and frequency have a certain degree of isolation, it can make both of them work properly.
