DiGiCo's Quantum 7 future proof historic Aarhus Theatre

Situated in the heart of Aarhus, Denmark's second largest city, the theatre was built in the 1890s and opened in 1900. Architecturally lavish and the city's most popular cultural attraction, it boasts four stages and a total of 1,200 seats.

Aarhus Theatre has a long history of investing in new equipment, but with much of its infrastructure becoming old, in the summer of 2018 a complete rebuild was undertaken, including power and stage machinery. Every single cable, hoist, gallery, turntable stage and elevator was pulled out and replaced.

All this took place from the end of May to the end September, says the theatre's head of sound, Lars Gaarde. It doesn't sound like such a short time, but there were a lot of people working in a very small area, and the time flew.

Having had a relationship with KDMC for many years, and knowing that it could deliver exactly what was expected, the theatre once again turned to the company to provide the audio equipment it required, including the Quantum 7.

That you can trust your partner in such a large project means a lot, both in regard build quality, pricing and, not least, that it will be done on time, even though the builders are late, Gaarde continues. The work between us, KDMC, Elcon and Bluenode, who were the AV consultants on the project, was second to none.

Having been amongst the first to invest an SD7 when it came out, purchasing it in 2008, the theatre's decision to invest in a Quantum 7 was, explains Gaarde, a mix of refurbishing hardware before it was needed and the desire to remain at the cutting edge of technological tools.

There are many new features in the Quantum 7 that fit very well with our workflow, he states. The idea was not simply to get more inputs and busses, but more to get the new features that Quantum brings to the table, such as Nodal Processing, True Solo, Spice Rack, etc.

We were amongst the first in the world to use Quantum 7 and it presented a few challenges for our engineers, but we had great support from both DiGiCo and KDMC and they quickly got to grips with it. We are delighted with our decision to purchase the Quantum 7 and we know that we are now very well equipped for the next decade.
