New Series Looks Back at a Century of the Arts in Ireland A brand new arts programme on RT Radio 1 takes a look back at the past century of arts in Ireland. Altered States: 100 Years of the Arts in Ireland airs Thursday nights at 10pm until the 15th September.

Produced by Cl odhna N Anluain, the series takes a thematic look at how the arts have fared over the last hundred years, and how Irish culture has been reflected in the arts since the foundation of the Republic of Ireland.

Where and how have we experienced the arts - in galleries, theatres, cinemas and at festivals; Reporting the arts on radio, television, newspapers and journals; Seminal arts publications; Education and the arts and the opening up of access to the arts; The national institutions; Archiving our arts; Irish arts abroad, and international influences which made their mark on Ireland.

Content includes new and archive recordings of artists, writers, academics and professionals who have made their lives in the arts.

Tonight's programme considers the arts in our formal education system - primary and secondary school as well as the art college and college of music experience.

Also, how our cultural institutions have developed education departments and links with the public, the role The Arts Council has played in highlighting the importance of education and the arts.

Contributors include John Coolahan, Helen O Donohue, Ciaran Benson and Ita Beasang.
