Rassie van der Dussen injured by a bee and five other weird sporting injuries

Proteas batsman Rassie van der Dussen was forced to retire hurt during the Lions clash with the Cobras in Paarl which got us thinking about some of the weirdest injuries sustained by athletes whether on the field, at home or in a toilet.

Van der Dussen's injury itself doesn't rank given the sheer number of bee related incidents in recent South African cricket history. Bees stopped play at the Wanderers in 2017 and earlier this year Quinton de Kock missed out on stumping Shaun Marsh because he was stung by a bee.

The list is not definitive (Athletes appear to be quite adept at hurting themselves in bizarre) but does include some absolute rippers. You can also read about rather gruesome rugby specific injuries over here. No, we don't mean the time the Springboks lost to Japan.

Darren Fletcher (Football) Fletcher fell victim to a loose toilet door after Manchester United beat Lyon in the Champions League in March 2008. The midfielder was left unconscious and bleeding after a trip to the head. Having concluded the business of the evening on the field and his business in the loo, Fletcher attempted to open the door which came off its hinges and struck him in the head knocking him out cold.

Johan Goosen (Rugby) While Fletcher's injury was weird in that it was a freak accident, the injury sustained by Racing Metro's South African flyhalf Johan Goosen was weird for its sheer banality. Goosen injured his knee stepping of the bus after arriving for a fixture against Toulouse. He hurt the knee descended the bus stairs and missed three weeks of action.

Darius Vassell (Football) Blisters are a big part of the life of a professional athlete and most of the elite don't have each and every one attended to by a medical professional but Darius Vassell took DIY to the extreme when he attempted to pop a blood blister under his toenail with a power drill. He missed several games for Aston Villa in 2002 after the toe, shockingly, became infected.

Chris Lewis (Cricket) It was 1994, fully five years before the release of Baz Luhrmann's smash hit Everyone is free to wear sunscreen, so perhaps Chris Lewis can be forgiven for failing to apply any protection to his freshly shaved head and failing to even wear a hat in the baking Antigua sun. The England man was dubbed the prat without a hat' as sun stroke saw him miss England's next match on the tour of the West Indies.

Dustin Penner (Ice Hockey) The 2012 season was a hugely significant for Former LA Kings Left Wing Dustin Penner. He earned his first ever Stanley Cup winners ring but during that campaign he sustained an injury that forever cemented his place in the weird/hilarious injuries hall of fame. Penner sent his back into spasm while tucking into a stack of pancakes made for him by his wife and had to miss an NHL game against the Washington Capitals.

Of the injury Penner said at the time: Apparently it's one of those mysterious things, where you can throw it out (from) sneezing. I just leaned over to dip into some delicious pancakes that my wife made. It's just like it [the pain] wraps around you and squeezes. So it was disappointing. Hopefully it's just an isolated incident, and not something that's going to become chronic.
