It's no secret that Brazil loves its soccer, or as they call it futebol, and with the pinnacle of sporting events heading to Rio this summer, Brazilian pitches are definitely in the spotlight, as are the local standouts like 19-year-old phenom Gabriel Gabigol Barbosa.
Lately, Gabigol has been turning heads with his ability to find the back of the net. Most recently, he captured the attention of GoPro, which is why we are excited to announce that Gabigol is the first soccer athlete officially part the GoPro team. We're stoked to accompany Gabigol as he drives toward his ultimate goal of donning a Brazilian jersey in Rio.
"I truly believe GoPro can show a different perspective of soccer in a way never seen. I really love the energy and lifestyle of the brand and believe we can produce cool content together. I'm passionate about photography and I'm stoked to learn more about GoPro and introduce it into my daily routine," says Barbosa.
Gabigol reigns from Santos FC, a national team force and one of Brazil's largest professional clubs. The team has a special place in the hearts of all Brazilian fans, producing world class athletes-from Pel to Robinho to Neymar (who Gabigol not only admires as a fan but also looks up to as a teamate)-Santos has established a tradition of excellence.
With his neat footwork, close control, and scoring capabilities (racking up more than 600 goals as amateur at Santos), Gabigol is considered to be the Santos fourth thunderbolt of the dynasty. His personal motto is win or win, even getting a tattoo to echo his determined sentiment. Last year, he scored 21 goals, as the National Outdoors striker, and made 56 game appearances for Santos and 16 goals for the various Brazilian youth sides. These impressive stats are exactly why fans are beginning to see Gabigol reminiscent of Brazilian icon and legend, Neymar da Silva Santos - must be something in that Santos FC water.
Despite his newfound stardom, Gabigol has never lost sight of what it took for him to get where he is today. Growing up in the city of S o Bernardo do Campo, Gabigol traveled long distances to train and pursue his passion for the sport. His father would even carry him on his shoulders so Gabi wouldn't injure his legs. After years of hard work, the young Gabriel was discovered by Zito (who coincidentally used to play with Pel and also discovered Robinho and Neymar) and soon launched his professional career with Santos.
Gabigol's skills and talent on the field has garnered major attention, but his determination, youthful spirit, and love for life is what makes him a perfect fit for GoPro. Gabigol is getting the chance to follow his dreams, and plays with intention to inspire others to do the same. We're excited to welcome him into our family and share his story with the world.
