Based on the topics discussed in the Multi-Cloud Article, it is clear that the choice of cloud storage mix will be based on the requirements placed on the data in terms of Digital Content Governance or revenue generation. With that in mind, it is interesting to look at the different cloud personalities that exist (this is far from an exhaustive list) and which platforms might suit them best.
Cloud-First Active Archives Who: News, sports, OTT, and VoD organisations.
Why: They need fast and frequent access to archived content for scheduled content movement and a quick turnaround as well as longer-form productions. Reduction or re-purposing of real estate can also be a driving factor.
Platform or platforms required:
Media focused private cloud with little or no or low egress fees for archive and/or proxies.
Public cloud for workflow, data services and deep archive for an insurance copy.
Hybrid Sharers Who: Post-Production, VFX, VoD.
Why: They need tight on-prem workflow integrations as performance and security are key to their customers. Not every customer allows their content to be put into the public cloud. Also, they require the ability to backup content outside of the facility whilst enabling their staff and customers to self-serve access to content from anywhere.
Platform or platforms required:
Media focused on-prem storage for tight integrations, security and performance.
Media focused private cloud with no or low egress fees for archive and or proxies.
Public cloud for workflow, data services and deep archive for insurance copy.
Fire and Forgetters Who: Not many in the media industry.
Why: Keep rushes of everything shot and hope they never ever have to go back to them. They will accept the egress penalties if the content is required.
Platform or platforms required:
Most likely public cloud deep archive.
The Brand Loyalist Who: Mostly Fortune 500 organisations or companies cosying up with a public cloud provider for mutually beneficial sponsorship deals (meow).
Why: Doesn't matter why. As the old saying goes you don't get fired for buying big blue even if what you are buying is overpriced and there are more appropriate options out there.
Platform or platforms required:
One cloud provides for everything. Storage, workflow, screens, cables, desks, chairs, food and fashion.
Blue Collar Creatives Who: Financial institutions, insurance companies, emergency services, governments and parliaments etc.
Why: Digital Content Governance, security and audit are all important, as well as tight media workflow integrations. They are likely to use cloud services already but are also highly likely to be governed by internal and external regulations to ensure content is protected in a compliant manner.
Platform or platforms required:
Media focused on-prem storage for tight integrations, digital content governance and performance.
Media focused private cloud with no or low egress fees for backup & archive where allowed.
Public cloud for workflow, data services and deep archive for insurance copy.
More Creative than Technical Who: Thousands or tens of thousands of production companies of all sizes.
Why: Needs to protect the content they own and make it available for re-use and re-licensing. Currently looking at cloud as they, typically the smaller companies, do not have the physical space or internal staff dedicated to managing media and IT infrastructure.
Platform or platforms required:
Media focused private cloud with no or low egress fees for backup & archive where allowed.
Public cloud for workflow, data services and deep archive for insurance copy.
