TeliaSonera invests in new 4G frequencies in Norway

TeliaSonera invests in new 4G frequencies in the 800 MHz band in Norway. Along with prolonged licences in 900 MHz band and more 4G frequencies in the 1,800 MHz band, the investment underlines TeliaSonera's ambition to support customers with high speed data connections across the country.

The Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority today announced the results of the long awaited multi band auction in Norway. TeliaSonera's new frequencies in the 800 MHz band will enable significant increase in 4G coverage, and constitute an important step towards offering high speed mobile connections to both urban and rural areas. With the acquired licenses follows requirements of offering high speed mobile internet access to 98 percent of the population in five years.

Supporting our customers' need for mobility and effortless use of streaming services, advanced applications and professional tools is our key task. The new frequencies in the 800 MHz band along with more 4G frequencies in the 1,800 MHz band and extended 900 MHz licenses allow an ambitious high speed network roll out to 98 percent of the population in five years in Norway, says Sverker Hannervall, acting Head of Mobility Services.

Today, TeliaSonera offers 4G coverage to approximately 50 percent of the Norwegian population (LTE, 1,800 MHz and 2,600 MHz bands), and high speed 3G access to approximately 85 percent of the population.

The licences granted for the 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz bands are valid for 20 years starting from January 1, 2014. Coverage requirements are technology neutral. The price for the frequency blocks will be made public on Tuesday December 10, as the Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority announces more details on the auction.
