Recently, a group of SoCal female surfers set out on an epic weekend road trip to score some of the local, iconic breaks in the area. They took GoPro along to capture the action. The following words are by Meg Roh.
The morning is dewy and still dark. In a motion that feels like a robotic second nature, I strap my beloved pink longboard on top of my dirty Prius and toss wetsuits into the car. First light begins to show, and I yawn as I turn onto Interstate 5. I'm tired, but it feels good to be visiting my hometown, better to be driving to surf the break I grew up at, and best to be doing it all in the summertime with my friends. I feel like a little kid on Christmas morning as I exit the freeway-full of unparalleled excitement for a summer day at the beach.
Slowly, I roll down San Onofre's dirt road until I see the familiar faces of my friends Danielle and Maria. Their smiling faces light up my arrival and their hands wave me towards an open parking spot next to theirs. Our reunion is filled with hellos and hugs and the air around us hums with anticipation for a weekend full of sunshine, waves and fun. We huddle together, studying the waves, discussing the water temperature and debating what to wear-a ritual that always seems to happen before each surf session. Decisions are made, boards are waxed, sunscreen is ever so generously applied, and we paddle out for our first session. The lineup is suddenly filled with our laughter, squeals and cheering each other on to waves-surfing with girlfriends is fun in its truest form. Danielle captures these precious moments on a HERO11 Black, held securely in place with the Bite Mount, ensuring our accomplishment of a coveted party wave is immortalized.
After our surf session, we picnic and lounge in the sun. Danielle brought her dominoes set and we settle into a not-so-competitive game of bones as we scheme our next moves. As the south wind starts to blow, we pack our cars and head north to avoid the afternoon blowout.
Sheryl Crow blasts on the stereo as we make our way north. Unexpectedly, we drive into a hazy fog bank as we hit PCH, but luckily it clears as we reach our final destination for the day-Malibu's iconic First Point. It's golden hour here and the small, perfect rights paired with a beach packed towel-to-towel paint the quintessential summer in California scene. It's Maria's first time surfing First Point and it feels special to share such an unforgettable session with friends. Jordan and Lauren, our trusty videographer-photographer duo, capture it all using the floating Handler Grip. As the sun slips below the horizon, the day ends the way all solid days of surfing end-devouring burritos and watching the sky fade from pink to purple.
By Sunday, we reach Ventura for a final surf session at California Street with beloved local and unofficial parking lot manager, Ming Hui. The water is colder, but refreshing, and a swell fills in for a morning full of fun waves. When the tide gets too high, Danielle, Maria and Ming trade their surfboards for skateboards and cruise around the boardwalk. I sit on the front of Ming's board watching Danielle and Maria stylishly weave through the crowds of people. Ming takes over the GoPro to capture the land session.
Our road trip draws to a close with a final family breakfast, where we sip coffee, reminisce about our weekend and plot for the next big surf adventure as Danielle transfers GoPro footage to the Quik app on her phone. We all huddle around as she queues up the video premiere of our unforgettable weekend trip.
Shout out to the fully staked, all female crew for this production: Video - Jordyn Romero; Photo - Lauren Hensgens; Words - Meg Roh; and Editor/Producer: Danielle Black Lyons.
