Canon is to enter the production display market for the first time with the launch of a 30-inch reference display specifically designed for colour grading and high quality 4K video production.
The new DP-V3010 is intended to complement Canon's Cinema EOS System for 4K digital cinema and video production.
It is designed to provide repeatable, accurate output, and is optimised for use in colour grading. It will natively display 4K and offer a range of colour options, and is versatile enough to use on location, or for other digital imaging tasks such as CGI work, Computer Aided Design and 3D animation.
The new DP-V3010 represents an exciting step for Canon that complements our existing 4K portfolio. We've listened carefully to the needs of the market throughout the development of the display to deliver an exceptional product suited to even the highest quality productions. It offers incredible accuracy, reliability and flexibility and combined with our Cinema EOS cameras, provides an excellent input-to-output solution for use in a wide range of scenarios, claimed Kieran Magee, director of Professional Marketing, Canon Europe.
The DP-V3010 is powered by a custom-developed image processor designed and manufactured by Canon. The processor, when combined with an RGB LED backlight system and IPS LCD panel, promises to provide highly consistent quality and colour, both on-set during shooting and in post. It should help to ensure consistent brightness and colour, for a high level of uniformity across the full screen. A 10-bit panel driver works with the processor to display 1,024 gradation levels for each RGB colour to deliver smoother, more accurate gradation characteristics.
It supports the most commonly used cinema colour space, DCI-P3, as well as the colour gamut specifications of various broadcast standards (ITU-R BT.709, EBU and SMPTE-C) and the Adobe RGB colour space (although it does not contain all RGB chromaticity points).
It has a resolution of 4096x2560 pixels, with a Pixel Pitch of 157.5 m, enabling the display of native DCI 4K resolution (4096x2160) without image scaling. The display is also suited to PC-based editing tasks, such as high-resolution still-image processing and visual-effects production work, thanks to a panel aspect ratio of 16:10. It also boasts a contrast ratio of more than 2000:1, the minimum recommended by SMPTE for digital cinema post-production work. For accurate display of night-time shots and other dark scenes, the DP-V3010 is claimed to precisely reproduce gradation in dark areas of an image.
For on-location monitoring, it has a dedicated picture mode that supports Canon Log Gamma, enabling conversion of footage shot using Cinema EOS System cameras into images suitable for monitoring whilst on set.
It accepts a wide variety of 4K video input signals from 23.98p to 60p, including the 50p frame rate common in European broadcast productions. Support for the ASC CDL (American Society of Cinematographers Colour Decision List) metadata format and 1D/3D-LookUp Tables (LUTs) allows accurate colour matching on set or in the grading suite.
The DP-V3010 also offers three scaling display modes for 2K and full HD video production, including Canon's Shape Tracing Technology, which suppresses the jagged appearance of diagonal lines when content is enlarged and displayed at full-screen resolution.
Colour precision is continuously maintained during use via an advanced system that automatically corrects any changes in colours and brightness over time, to ensure stable display performance.
Operability and maintenance are further enhanced by support for calibration of white balance, brightness, colour temperature, colour gamut and gamma without the need for a PC, when a compatible third-party sensor is used.
Brightness is specified at 48cd/m2 (DCI), 100cd/m2, with a viewing angle of 178 . It has 3G/HD-SDI and DisplayPort I/O, plus USB and LAN control interfaces. The DP-V3010 is expected to be available in Europe in Q1, 2014.
