The adoption of the electronic health record is a hot topic. While patients, providers, and politicians may all have their own unique point of view on the mandate to go electronic, the growing pervasiveness of the electronic record is evident.The infographic below shows some interestingstatistics on the trend(clickthe image toseefull infographic). But for these weary travelers on the path to the fully electronic health record, there is some good news. On this journey, studies show that we're past the halfway mark with 54% of physicians (across all practice sizes) adopting an EHR. While the adoption rates were much greater in HMOs, Community Health Systems and Academic Health Centers, physician owned practices are also well on their way. Practices with 11+ physicians had an 86% adoption rate, while solo practitioners were at 29%. The HIMSS Ambulatory EMR Adoption Model (EMRAM) shows a similar trend with the majority of Ambulatory facilities at earlier stages of adoption.
While the long-term benefits of the electronic health record are subject to some current debate, there are some promising early returns. In addition to making records readily available at the point of care, 88% of respondents show that the EHR produces clinical benefits, and 75% report that they are able to deliver better patient care. As providers grow more comfortable with the electronic record, and the technology becomes more widespread, these numbers should continue to grow.
In addition to clinical benefits, providers can also experience cost savings by moving to the EHR . These savings are primarily attributed to the automation of several time-consuming tasks, including reduced transcription costs, more accurate reimbursement coding, and reduced labor to store, pull and refile patient charts. Along with the cost savings are the additional benefits of reduced medical errors and improved quality of care.
To some, the benefits of the electronic health record may seem to be in the unseen future not visible from their current vantage point. Their journey may feel like the Long and Winding Road with no clear path to their goal. For these practitioners that are in the earlier stages of their EHR journey, there are lessons to be learned from providers that have successfully made the transition before them.
One simple piece of advice is to not travel the road alone. By partnering in the transition, these health systems have eliminated the burden on in-house resources while quickly reaching a new level of capacity. Better yet, partnering can offer a faster path to the ultimate destination: improved outcomes and enhanced patient care.And, with Health Information Managers in the drivers' seat, providers are in good hands for a smooth ride ahead.
