4,329 Students Competed in Their Eco-knowledge Ljubljana, 13 March 2013 Slovenian middle school students are once again acquiring eco-knowledge and competing for the title of the biggest eco-dudes. The contest was held on Friday, 8 March on the eko.telekom.si website, and 170 middle schools from the whole country took part. The topics covered in this year's Ecoquiz are extremely relevant: health and well-being, energy, and sustainable mobility. The three-member teams who achieved the best results at the regional level will be entered into the national competition, to be held in April in Ljubljana.

Slovenia is one of the most active countries in terms of the pan European Eco-school program, as it has 717 schools, kindergartens, and other educational institutions participating in the program. Every year the institutions that are a part of the Eco-school program conduct a number of activities devoted to teaching children about the environment, and Ecoquiz is just one of them. Students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades take part in the competition, getting a deeper understanding of certain topics in environmental protection. This knowledge is combined with the rest of their eco-activities, giving them a comprehensive education on leading an environmentally friendly way of life. It is extremely important that they take the knowledge and good habits they learn home with them, spreading the word to their parents and other family members who did not have the same education about the environment when they were children, said Gregor Cerar, the national Eco-school coordinator.

The Eco-schools competing in the conversation are grouped by 8 regions. The most teams 452 of them were from central Slovenia. Following it were the Maribor and Novo Mesto regions, with 381 and 198 teams respectively. In Pomurje 165 teams competed, while there were 205 in Celje, 92 on the coast, 58 in northern Primorska, and 25 from Gorenjska. The learning material in Ecoquiz is meant for the various age groups of the students competing. This year 6th graders tackled health and well-being, while 7th graders learned about energy, and 8th graders about sustainable mobility.

Every year we prepare the Ecoquiz learning material in collaboration with external experts. We are competing in Ecoquiz for the 5th time, while the competition itself boasts a 10 year tradition. We strive to make sure that every year Ecoquiz continues to spread its social value and our commitment, while at the same time remaining interesting in terms of content for the participating middle schoolers, said Simon Furlan, Marketing Director at Telekom Slovenije. He further added that they also consider the point of view of everyday life when making choices about the content. Among other things this year we included efficient energy use, as this continues to rise around the world, a fact we contribute to exactly with our habits and our modern way of life.

Ever since entering into partnership with Telekom Slovenije, Ecoquiz has been held entirely online learning material, practice questions, all instructions and information, as well as the questions from the competition itself are available to competitors and their mentors at http://eko.telekom.si. Mostly due to the attractive nature of the competition, the number of Ecoquiz competitors continues to rise. Everyone else can compete for fun at the website eko.telekom.si or on Facebook, where they can answer questions through a Facebook app and enter to win a monthly prize.
