Recent trends in UHD and IT production and distribution

At recent events such as IBC in Amsterdam, the current status of the new technologies and UHD has been debated. The introduction of UHD is very different to the introduction of HD which preceded it. When HD came to the market it experienced the added support of flat panel displays which could show for the first time the beautiful imagery to best advantage.

The situation with UHD is different, not least because the quality improvement for most consumers in going from HD to UHD is less than the benefit of transitioning from SD to HD, despite a significant increase in resolution, data rate and bandwidth. And of course the flat panel advantage no longer applies as most tube-based displays have already been replaced.

Therefore, consumers need more and these come in the form of dynamic range, colour palette and frame rate.

For programme makers and distributors UHD is a game-changer for reasons beyond resolution and picture quality. SD and HD will not go away and therefore UHD in its many variations adds even more formats to the list that broadcasters and media companies must manage. Traditional infrastructures are designed for specific formats and therefore require replacement to manage additional and new formats. This is an unacceptable expense and delay as the number of formats grow. Consequently UHD has increased the requirement for an IT-based infrastructure which is independent of video formats and can therefore manage all the current ones and be updated to future formats as they arrive.

This presentation will provide more background to this summary and include research data from the IABM which highlights important trends in the professional technology industry.
