Believe it or not, there was an era where children had never heard of laptops, smartphones or tablets. Rather than chat to their friends on Facebook, kids would go outside and play in the streets, and, this year, Halfords take us on a nostalgic trip back to this time by asking Does anything beat a bike?
Devised by Mother and directed by Somesuchs Aoife McArdle, Street Rider is a 60 second online film that celebrates a time when going outside to play with your mates with done thing to do. Finish Colourist Paul Harrison added to the retro tone of the film whilst Flame artist Steve Murgatroyd enhanced the wintry elements in 2D using matte painting.
Steve says Halfords Street Rider is a wonderfully simple and beautifully executed idea. That idea being that nothing beats a bike for Christmas will resonate with all. Aoife McArdles naturalistic, almost observational approach meant the Christmas day depicted is not a winter wonderland but rather one that is realistic and recognisable.
He adds For Finish, this meant measured embellishment of shots rather than wholesale CG or matte painting replacements. Aoife used a Russian Arm throughout to achieve the fluidity, so 3D tracking and modelling of houses probably posed the biggest challenge for Finish.
Having been gifted a brand-new bike for Christmas, the young street rider shows that the bike is still the king when it comes to the present-giving stakes. He careers down the street on his new toy, grabbing the attention of the local school-children who cannot help but to stop, stare and admire the youngster. Theatrically pulling up his hood to enhance his tough-guy credentials, the street rider is joined by a number of other tiny bike-riding mavericks who, having formed a charming miniature biker gang, cycle off into the distance.
