Un an seulement apr s avoir quitt l cole, il signe la photo de Ilo Ilo dAnthony Chen, couronn par la Cam ra dOr Cannes en 2013. Il encha ne avec Apprentice de Boo Junfeng, dont limage fut aussi tr s remarqu e. Aujourdhui, il alterne entre les longs m trages, la publicit et le clip. Ce nest pas un probl me de faire le grand cart, bien au contraire , explique Benoit Soler. La publicit me permet de tester plein de choses qui vont venir nourrir mes fictions, et inversement. Le clip est aussi un tr s beau laboratoire dexpression. Lid e est de provoquer chez le spectateur linattendu, l motionnel. Mes choix sont principalement port s par la vision d'une r alisatrice ou d'un r alisateur.

J'aime travailler sur des publicit s narratives comme Samsung Little punk , r alis par Niclas Larsson (Iconoclast), Mercedes Immortal Love , r alis par Sebastian Strasser (Anorak), ou Zalando A life of liberty (Bwgtbld), r alis par Vincent Haycock, avec la contrainte de raconter une histoire en quelques secondes. Dans ce cas, mon travail s'inspire de mes exp riences en fiction et en clip. Le clip musical The Blaze Territory (Iconoclast), fut une exp rience tr s forte. Nous avons tout tourn Alger, en ALEXA Mini et ARRI Master Prime. Le film est naturaliste, trait comme des tableaux qui s'encha nent et tourn des moments pr cis de la journ e. Limage est au service de la narration et ne prend jamais le pas sur ce que lon raconte.

Parmi ses publicit s r centes, son remarquable travail pour Givenchy Fall/Winter 2021, r alis par Jasmine Loignon (Iconoclast). Pour cr er cet univers industriel, nous avons tourn dans un stade o nous avons utilis pr s de 350 projecteurs motoris s , explique Benoit Soler. Sur ce projet, jai travaill en collaboration troite avec le lighting designer Ignace D'Haese avec qui nous avons con u la lumi re Sur Givenchy , jai utilis une ALEXA Mini LF avec des optiques ARRI Signature Primes , indique le chef op rateur. Cela correspondait au rendu que je souhaitais sur ce film. Les piqu s des peaux sont tr s beaux et procure de belle texture. On obtient un rendu plaisant en sortie tr s rapidement. Depuis un upgrade r cent, lALEXA Mini LF permet aussi de tourner en Super 35. Cette versatilit mint resse beaucoup. Jaime bien lid e de pouvoir m langer format large et Super 35, comme lorsquon utilise 35mm et Super 16 dans un m me film. Cela permet de donner un point de vue diff rent, de raconter les choses autrement. Et le Super 35 me donne aussi acc s beaucoup plus doptiques que le grand format.

Au niveau des objectifs, je pr f re les optiques modernes , poursuit Benoit Soler. Je naime pas que limage soit trop nostalgique, Pour moi, les ARRI Signature Primes sont dans le prolongement des ARRI Master Prime que jutilise beaucoup. Limage et le piqu sont beaux, et elles ont une douceur qui mint resse. Jaime aussi beaucoup la mani re dont elles tombent dans les flous. Cest vraiment du registre de la sensation. De plus, les Signature Primes sont une s rie tr s compl te qui commence au 12mm et qui comprend toutes les optiques interm diaires que jutilise beaucoup.
