National Film and Video Foundation met with the Western Cape film industry

Apart from the session, the NFVF also had meetings with various stakeholders including the Cape Film Commission (CFC) where the two bodies engaged on a number of issues including the establishment of South African Film Commission. In the meeting, the NFVF reiterated its position on the matter that the establishment of such a structure is the mandate of the national body which is empowered by the legislation to do so.

We advised the CFC at the meeting that we hold a different view regarding their ability and authority to establish a national body of this nature. We agreed to disagree and the understanding was that each entity will proceed on this matter as it deems fit. Like we have said before, the NFVF together with the Department of Arts & Culture are currently following appropriate parliamentary channels to amend relevant legislation in order to give effect to such proposed changes, says NFVF CEO Zama Mkosi who led the NFVF delegation to Cape Town.

Furthermore, the NFVF committed to continue engaging with various bodies in the Western Cape to try and resolve whatever differences that may exist. We would like to see the impasse in the Province resolved and we will engage with all the affected stakeholders in this regard. Western Cape is one of the shining stars of South Africas film industry and we believe that it's in the industrys best interest to have an enabling environment there, adds Mkosi.

In addition to the stakeholder engagement, the NFVF also hosted the two day workshops on various aspects of filmmaking across the value chain; such as directing, producing, scriptwriting and distribution. There were also sessions on performance, animation and how to approach international markets and festivals. The sessions were facilitated by industry experts like actor Mutodi Neshehe (Muvhango), Roberta Durrant (Felix), John Volmink (Blitz Patrollie), Stuart Forest (Adventures in Zambezia, Khumba), Mayenzeke Baza (Blood Tokoloshe), Harry Toonboon and Clive Fischer (Ster Kinekor).

We would like to thank the industry for their participation, it was good to see a broader representation from various stakeholders and we were happy with the level of engagement that came through, concluded Mkosi.
