Coda Audio Makes Contact At Kesselhaus Friday 20. February 2015 16:48
December 2014 saw a brand new festival enjoy a successful first year in the German city of Munich. Offering 20 hours of the latest electronic music, Contact Festival took place at the city's Kesselhaus, where a comprehensive Coda Audio loudspeaker system ensuring that the venue's challenging acoustics posed no problems.
As its name suggests, Kesselhaus (Boiler House) originally housed the boiler which provided power for an industrial complex producing locomotives, turbines and tractors. Its industrial days ended 20 years ago and, after a decade laying derelict, it was converted into a unique event space. Being a former industrial building, the acoustics of the venue are very difficult, which is why Alexander Mayr of audio supplier TAPS Audio chose to use a Coda system.
Supplied by Coda's German distributor Audiovation, the main PA comprised 10 Coda ViRAY and two SC2-F bass extension cabinets flown on each side, with 12 ground stacked, sensor-controlled SCP subs and four G712 full-range loudspeakers for nearfill at the stage corners.
Thanks to its two-way coaxial eight inch dual-diaphragm planar wave driver, ViRAY delivers a smooth, linear response with increased power handling. Producing a true, coherent planar wave front from a rectangular piston without internal diffraction, the system's superior dispersion and high output makes it ideal for live electronic music.
Each of its two concentric annular ring diaphragms covers a smaller frequency range for increased power handling, high dynamic and extremely low distortion.
TAPS Audio used the 80 ViCOUPLER for the top four ViRAY cabinets each side, delivering exceptional audibility right to the back of the venue, while the inclusion of the SC2-F bass extension cabinets in each array added warmth and punch.
Bass is obviously a vital part of electronic music and the 12 SCP subs ensured that the bass was crisp and precise down to 25 Hz, while the G712 infills delivered extremely wide and flat frequency response for those close to the stage.
Coda loudspeakers also took care of DJ monitoring, with two G715 full-range system and four G15-SUB subwoofers delivering exceptional monitoring performance and audio quality from a very small footprint, ensuring maximum stage room for the DJs.
Six Coda LINUS RACK20 units - each including a pair of LINUS10 amplifiers - powered and controlled the main PA, while a pair of LINUS CONs managed the nearfills and DJ monitors.
The Coda system delivered sound which was crystal clear at high SPLs, without the system ever getting near to its limits, says Alexander. We had nothing but positive feedback from the artists, audience and promoters. We hope the Contact Festival has a long future ahead with Coda systems, of course!
The day before the festival, TAPS Audio and Audiovation took the opportunity to demonstrate the Coda system to invited customers. As well as the quality and controllability of the sound, Audiovation's Norbert Sangermann and Alexander Mayr from TAPS Audio, were able to show how easy a ViRAY system is to rig and how Coda's remote LINUS Live software allows for fast, flexible system design, configuration, tuning and control.
With the system set up for the festival, it was a great opportunity to demonstrate the many advantages that Coda systems offer, says Alexander. All who attended were very impressed.
