This week sees the passing of John Volmink, devoted family man, business leader and ship captain. John was deeply creative at heart, was trained in business and was destined to have an abundant sense of both.

Having achieved a BCom (hons) degree from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, John Volmink began his professional career at JP Morgan in Johannesburg as an investment banking analyst.

In 2008, with Isaac Mogajane, he set out to pursue his life-long passion for filmmaking and launched a direct to customer, distribution company aimed at servicing the rapidly-growing market for local films.

In 2009, the pair met their third partner, Kagiso Lediga, and founded Diprente Films. Since then, John has gone on to produce some of South Africa s most iconic TV shows and films including the International Emmy nominated news satire Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola, Blitz Patrollie, The Bantu Hour featuring jazz legend Hugh Masekela as well as the upcoming feature film Catching Feelings starring Kagiso Lediga, Pearl Thusi, Akin Omotoso and Andrew Buckland.

Beyond this, John has been involved in the development and early production of a number of large-scale international productions across multiple mediums including film, television and animation. John was determined to make a positive impact both in and out of the industry and was involved in social development projects providing a ladder of opportunity when and wherever he could.

Despite his early and unexpected passing, his legacy will live on through the projects that he has produced and developed and through the work that Diprente Films and everyone that he has inspired will continue to create in the years to come.

The entire creative industry of South Africa has lost a true pioneer and visionary, and while John will be sorely missed by everyone who ever had the privilege of working with him, one has only to look at his work to see that he has firmly lodged kindness, his devilish humour, strong sense of purpose, optimism and light-hearted demeanour among us all.

John is survived by his dearly loved wife, Kristie, and their wonderful daughter, Hannah.
