Telef nica, in collaboration with Sony, has conducted a 5G connectivity trial at the Movistar Arena in Spain using the 26 GHz millimetre wave (mmWave) band. The trial achieved upload speeds of over 1.8 Gbps, which Telef nica describes as the highest upload speed deployed to date on a commercial 5G network in Spain.
The trial demonstrated a Heavy Uplink configuration - a network optimized for uplink bandwidth - designed to support live video broadcasting and remote audiovisual production in high-traffic environments. Telef nica holds 1,000 MHz of spectrum in the 26 GHz band in Spain.
Sony tested a 5G audiovisual broadcasting system using the CBK-RPU7 remote production unit for HEVC video encoding, 4K UHD image capture via the HXC-FZ90, video transmission via the PDT-FP1 portable data transmitter, and decoding via the NXL-ME80 media processor at up to 100 Mbps.
This installation in the 26 GHz 5G band at the Movistar Arena demonstrates our commitment to next-generation networks. This technology enables use cases involving the management of large volumes of data in real time, driving both professional use within the industry and a superior connected experience for the public at mass events such as concerts and major sporting events, says Leonor Ostos, Director of Product and Service Development, Telef nica Spain.
5G promises greater flexibility for production companies, but bandwidth and architecture limitations have held it back until now. By combining the 5G mmWave technology deployed at the Movistar Arena, with Sony's unique HEVC solution, we're proving that 5G can meet the high-quality, low-latency demands of live production today, says Rob Thorne, Category Head of Networked Live, Sony Professional Europe.
Previous Telef nica 5G broadcast deployments include automated broadcasting at Abanca-Riazor stadium in A Coru a and the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, and a 5G trial connecting drones and wireless cameras at a European Tour golf event in 2021.
