Twin Pines brings Visual effects to a new level with Zipi and Zape and the island of CaptainWith more than 800 maps digitally retouched, the film includes an underwater sequence recreated entirely by computer which constitutes one of the visually most spectacular scenes of recent years in Spanish cinema.
Twin Pines It has made the Visual effects of ZIPI and Zape and the captains Islanddirected by Oskar Santos and starring Elena Anaya and young Teo Planell and Toni G mez, which debuted in cinemas on July 29. With more than 800 maps digitally retouched, the film has a development of unusual VFX in Spain and includes an underwater sequence recreated entirely by computer which constitutes one of the visually most spectacular scenes of recent years in Spanish cinema.
The production, whose first installment ZIPI and Zape and the Club of the marble the Spanish film was highest grossing 2013, was shot in Hungary and the Basque country in the summer of 2015. In total, the work of Twin pin meant six months of work in which participated more than 40 people for carry to the spectator to the magic island where is develops this film of adventures for all the family.
"The truth is that it is a very rich production visually where the digital retouching and effects have an enormous weight in the final result," explains Juanma Nogales, VFX supervisor at Twin Pines, who was the winner of a Gaud Prize and was twice nominated for the Goya for best special effects. "The film boasts a fantastic display of VFX and includes a large number of flat complexes where we combine many techniques and tools," it added.
The participation of Twin Pines in the film had the particularity that began to materialize during the script development phase. "That was essential for working on a film with visual development as this, because it allowed us to define the things that were going to be able or not done with effects, and from there to define the script and better plan the shooting", says Ana Rubio, Twin Pines VFX producer.
The film also had an important process of pre-production, which included a thorough work of localization from the whole team. "This phase was very important to define different creative aspects and for the director and the art director Mark us lines that follow in terms of design, both environments and extension of decorations," recalls Juanma. "Also to determine how it had to be filmed some scenes so that they could later be postproducidas in the time we had", he adds.
Sequence submarina
The most spectacular effects of ZIPI and Zape and the captains Island they can be seen in an underwater sequence in which the twin protagonists of the film are mounted on a mini submarine and are faced with a giant squid. Its a scene about 10 minutes that was digitally recreated entirely by the Twin Pines team and that includes nearly 200 planes of VFX, a display of effects rarely seen in Spanish cinema.
This sequence was used a model of a submarine made on scale 1:3 and shot on a blue screen at high speed then be enhanced with digital moving parts and integrated in an underwater environment generated in 3D. As a guide to link the physical filming and digital post-production was previously prepared a detailed animated storyboard which provided valuable information to the various technical teams that participated in the sequence.
Special mention deserves the recreation of the giant squid, prepared in collaboration with the study Post23 of Barcelona, which was in charge of 3D and its animation as well as the simulation of the bubbles. The VFX work in this underwater sequence also included the process of integration of the real characters mentioned aquatic elements and computer-generated environments.
But in addition, the Visual effects of the film included an important work of expansion sets, rebuild natural spaces, integration of funds, creation of innumerable elements in 3D such as mechanisms, doors and marbles, union of spaces rolled thousands of miles of distance and a long etcetera.
Tools
3DEqualizer (3D-tracking), PFTrack (matchmoving) and ftrack (project management) tools like Nuke (composition), Maya (3D), Houdini (simulation), Adobe PhotoShop (photo retouching), SpeedTree (creation of plants and trees), ZBrush (carved and painted), were used for this. Twin Pines resorted also to equipment for surveying the physical scanning of the decorations.
The truth is that at Twin Pines are delighted with their work. "It was a production that we enjoyed, with a fantastic team work and coordination between the director, art director, director of photography and the VFX," concludes Juanma Nogales.
