SABC2's longest-running Afrikaans soapie 7de Laan is celebrating its 22nd birthday today (4 April).

The popular soapie is currently in its 23rd season and is the most-watched Afrikaans soapies by viewership in Mzansi.

7DE LAAN': 22 YEARS AND 23 EPISODES SABC2's most viewed Afrikaan's soapie 7de Laan is celebrating 22 years on television.

The show's executive producer Thandi Ramathesele told Actors Spaces:

As society still deeply depends on television for entertainment, news, education, culture, and the likes.

We're humbled to still find a space in which we can tell important stories that viewers are excited to watch and engage with, especially when they have a plethora of content to choose from.

The show has introduced audiences to a variety of families over the years, from the Terreblanches, the Meintjies, the Welmans, and the Bassons to the Visagies.

Every season has its highlights in Hillside and the show will continue finding new ways of exploring these stories.

7de Laan recently (31 December) introduced a family the Visagies after the Bassons, the Meintjies, the Terreblanches, and the Welmans.

The Visagies hail from Groblersdal and promise that South African families will relate to them they are a middle class, hardworking, and an honest family.

They're generally happy-go-lucky people, have enigmatic energy, and have had their fair share of highs and lows.

The family consists of Werner Visagie, who is husband to Tanya, and father to Uys, and son to Augusta.

Tanya Visagie is wife to Werner, mother to Uys, and daughter-in-law to Augusta.

Uys Visagie is son to Tanya and Werner and grandson to Augusta.

Augusta Visagie is mother to Werner, mother-in-law to Tanya, and grandmother to Uys.

7de Laan also introduced the Bassons in December 2019 when DeWet Basson played by Dirk Stoltz assumed ownership of the Welman house and scared Willem off.

DeWet attempted to kill his wife; Erika Basson (played by Corine Du Toit) for having an affair with Willem Spies (Markus Haywood).

He also kidnapped his daughter; Nikki Basson (played by Danielle Retief) and held her prisoner for several weeks to save her from drug addiction.

This was DeWet's second time in Hillside as he made an appearance in season one when he worked for Sandra Stutterheim (Hel ne Lombard).

DeWet is currently going through a great loss which was caused by his rivals, the Welmans.

Rickus Welman accidentally killed DeWet's son, Shawn Basson (De nr Reiners) and Rickus' parents buried him.

The Welman's were introduced by 7de Laan in May 2016 after the Terreblanches exit.

The Welmans include Chris Welman (David Rees), Mariaan Welman (Deidre Wolhunter), Alexa Welman (Carina Nel), Rickus Welman (Andr Lotter) and Amorey Welman (Kristan Wraath).

They're falling apart at the moment after their alcoholic son, Rickus accidentally killed Shawn Basson and Chris and Mariaan buried him.

A furious DeWet is looking for his son's killers and has no idea that Welmans killed him yet.

Amorey's older sister Alexa is now married to Fikani Chauke (Nicholas Nkuna) but can't bear children and her sister Amorey is their surrogate.

Fikani and Alexa will also learn that Lesedi Moloi (KB Motsilenyane) stole his sperm and is also pregnant with his child when she returns.
