Gonzalo Su rez began his artistic activity in 1951, in Madrid, writing plays and performing on stage. He also devoted himself to painting and lived for a time in Paris. From 1958, he settled in Barcelona where he became the journalism with the pseudonym of Martin Girard, being considered a forerunner of the so-called "new journalism".

Ha alternado la literatura con el cine, como guionista y director. Sus libros y sus pel culas supusieron una ruptura con el naturalismo en boga consolidando una carrera excepcional. Ha escrito 13 novelas y numerosos relatos, cuentos y ensayos y para el cine, ha dirigido m s de una veintena de largometrajes, reconocidos tanto en Espa a como a nivel internacional.

Su carrera tambi n ha sido reconocida con otros muchos galardones como el Premio Nacional de Cinematograf a, la Medalla de Oro de las Bellas Artes o la Orden de Caballero de las Artes y las Letras de Francia.
