Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures y Columbia Pictures estrenan RoboCop, una producci n de Strike Entertainment, protagonizada por Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jennifer Ehle, Jay Baruchel, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, y Samuel L. Jackson. Dirigida por Jos Padilha y escrita por Joshua Zetumer y Edward Neumeier, el director de fotograf a ha sido Lula Carvalho quien junto al supervisor de efectos, James E.Price, ha hecho un trabajo impecable.
Hombre y m quina se dan la mano en RoboCop, una nueva visi n del cl sico de culto de los a os 80. En el filme, el polic a Alex Murphy se convierte en el producto estrella de OmniCorp, la empresa l der de defensa rob tica en el mundo. En la ciudad de Detroit, devastada por la delincuencia, OmniCorp identifica la forma de introducir el polic a perfecto- un robot que pueda limpiar las calles de la ciudad sin arriesgar las vidas de los polic as.
Para OmniCorp, Murphy representa una gran oportunidad. Es un producto que ellos quieren vender, explica Padilha. Es un prototipo. Lo han desarrollado como quien desarrolla un nuevo refresco. Intentan dar con el dise o ideal de un nuevo robot para vend rselo a las comisar as. Potencialmente, estar amos hablando de miles de millones de d lares que se embolsar a la empresa y est n motivados a conseguir esa pasta a toda costa, aunque no sea de la forma m s tica. Pero hay un detalle que han obviado - dentro del producto, hay un hombre; no es un mero traje, es un ser humano. Montan esta invenci n pensando que podr n controlarla, pero eligieron al hombre equivocado. Eligieron a alguien demasiado bueno, un t o dispuesto a usar sus nuevos poderes a favor de la justicia.
Padilha asegura que su participaci n en el filme ocurri de casualidad por designios del destino: Ten a una reuni n en MGM, est bamos hablando de pel culas que me gustar a hacer. Ten an un poster del RoboCop original y dije, pues, mira, esa es una pel cula que me hubiera gustado hacer. Es brillante, un cl sico, un icono. Les di mi perspectiva y dijeron, pues hag mosla. Fue una afortunada coincidencia- un estudio que ten a el material adecuado, un fan, y un poster.
Los productores del filme, Marc Abraham y Eric Newman, dicen que Padilha era la opci n perfecta para dirigir esta nueva visi n de RoboCop. El estudio realmente se arriesg , dice Abraham. Acudieron a un realizador que hab a hecho documentales brillantes y dos pel culas, Elite Squad y Elite Squad 2, que fueron enormemente exitosas, especialmente en Brasil - Elite Squad gan el Oso de Oro en el Festival de Cine de Berl n. Estaban entusiasmados de poder contratar a un realizador original para hacer una pel cula original.
Las pel culas de Jos exhiben una cualidad fren tica, asegura Newman. Sales del cine pensando Eso ha molado'. Pero a la vez, inyecta vida en la pel cula con su propio punto de vista. A ade Newman que RoboCop proporcion el marco id neo para ello. RoboCop sigue siendo tan relevante ahora que cuando se estren , continua. Jos quer a hacer una pel cula exitosa en dos niveles- ten a que rebosar acci n y dejarte sin aliento con cosas jam s vistas hasta el momento - pero la tem tica tambi n ten a que ser relevante, ten a que comentar el mundo en el que vivimos.
Es divertido ir al cine, pas rtelo en grande y pensar, aqu hay algo, explica el realizador. Mediante su admiraci n de RoboCop, Padilha encontr la forma de representar esa historia en la pantalla de una forma novedosa y muy actual. Actualmente los temas de la pel culas son aun m s candentes, confiesa el director. Nos adentramos a un mundo donde las guerras ser n automatizadas. Veremos robots sustituyendo a soldados y polic as. Ahora comenzamos un intenso debate sobre los robots de uso militar, los cuales no son automatizados - hay un ser humano que observa desde un lugar remoto y decide cu ndo apretar el gatillo. Pero, qu ocurre cuando un programa inform tico o un algoritmo toma esa decisi n? Todo lo que sale en la pel cula ser real en muy poco tiempo, y tendremos que discutir estos temas y decidir si est bien o no. Es fascinante tener la oportunidad de dirigir este proyecto tantos a os despu s tras conocer todo lo que ha ocurrido en el terreno tecnol gico, e intentar recrearlo en nuestros tiempos actuales, pero a la vez, mantener vivo ese debate filos fico que representa el personaje original.
Look futurista
In the RoboCop original los realizadores emplearon animaci n fotograma a fotograma para el ED-209. En la nueva entrega, los realizadores se decantaron evidentemente por los efectos visuales. Ese momento en el que ves el ED-209 en la pel cula original es realmente memorable - pero, debido a la clase de animaci n que emplearon, el movimiento de la c mara y la composici n de los planos eran muy limitados, asegura el supervisor de efectos visuales James E. Price. Ahora que somos capaces de emplear herramientas modernas tenemos m s flexibilidad. Realmente somos capaces de integrar movimiento sofisticado y construcciones diferentes en esas escenas. Y esta forma de trabajar encaja perfectamente con el estilo de Jos - es muy activo y la c mara se mueve mucho, l vive el momento. No tuvimos que amarrar la c mara, la dejamos volar y as los efectos visuales se adaptaron a su forma de rodar.
Para lograr el look futurista de RoboCop, los realizadores acudieron al director de producci n Martin Whist. Aunque el d a a d a de un director de producci n es la configuraci n de los plat s - y sin duda Whist fue el responsable de los mismos - tambi n dise otros aspectos del filme,
