ZEI AIMax: the New Generation of Digital Sensors

The ZEISS AIMax digital 3D sensor offers a unique combination of three measuring principles in one compact sensor. This makes it the new benchmark in robot-based 3D inline metrology for sheet metal processing and car body construction. ZEISS is officially presenting the new sensor at an in-house exhibition titled "Experience Car Body Metrology in Close-up" at its Bochingen site in Germany.

As a solutions provider for inline metrology and vision-based quality inspection systems in the automotive and manufacturing industries, ZEISS has been offering measuring robots featuring dedicated sensors for several years now. In addition to scalable 2D image processing systems, the ZEISS portfolio includes robot-based 3D sensors for car body production. ZEISS AIMax has been specially developed to meet even the highest requirements in inline metrology. "The benefits of the ZEISS AIMax are particularly evident for complex geometric features such as boreholes, screw threads, or gap and alignment," says Michael Scheffler, Product Manager in the ZEISS Industrial Metrology business group.

Unique and fast

ZEISS AIMax is used primarily for car body measurement, for sheet metal processing and in the aerospace industry. "The speed at which the sensor precisely measures complex features is a key benefit for the user," says Scheffler. The user therefore benefits not only from considerable time savings, but also, and above all, from the reliability of the data provided by the ZEISS AIMax. "However, the absolute highlight is the combination of three measuring principles," says Scheffler. The advantages for the customer include multi-line triangulation, gray-tone image processing in 3D measuring results, as well as shadow evaluation, which is particularly important for the fast, reliable measurement of bolts.

Digital camera technology with high resolution and flexible illumination control for optimal lighting in every situation enables ideal contrast rendition of the evaluated features. Screws or nuts lying under sheet metal are clearly visible, for example. Its compactness ensures that the sensor also safely reaches its destination in cramped conditions and, thanks to its optimized design, the problems experienced in angled feature measurements are now a thing of the past.

Production-integrated measuring and testing systems

ZEISS AIMax is used directly on the shop floor, reflecting the commitment of ZEISS to providing its customers with advanced production-integrated measuring and testing solutions. Thanks to integrated, intelligent software solutions, the user can connect the measuring lab to the production testing systems. These deliver the quality status in real time and generate decentralized visualizations and reports, allowing rapid initiation of targeted measures and production decisions. Early warning systems form trend recognition mechanisms, therefore reducing the number of rejected parts and reworking. The networking and merging of the recorded quality data make it possible to exactly identify and remove sources of error. ZEISS solutions therefore increase the productivity and efficiency of automated production processes. ZEISS AIMax is the new benchmark for robot-based 3D inline metrology.
