ATFT To Hold Export Market Workshops

The Association for Transformation in Film and Television (ATFT) is proud to announce that it will host an export market introduction and readiness workshop ahead of the Toronto International film Festival in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban during the Durban International Film Festival.

The ATFT has developed this workshop as part of its on-going commitment to create opportunities and to up-skill filmmakers in South Africa, in financing, distribution, sales and co-production and has managed to secure space during the Durban Film Market for the first of the three workshops taking place across the country in July.

The ATFT is especially excited to announce that Todd Brown, Head of Acquisitions for XYZ Films in Toronto will be the facilitator of the workshops. Brown is internationally respected and is the founder and editor of the international film website TwitchFilm.com and the director of international programming for Fantastic Fest, where he makes good use of his moderate obsessive tendency to bring strange things to audiences around the world.

Brown is especially interested in South African film and has this to say of his on-going commitment to developing the South African film industry,

And over the past few years we have become convinced that all the elements are in place for South Africa to absolutely explode onto the global scene. There is an amazing base of talent here and when that talent learns how to best read and engage with the world at large there's no limit to the possibilities.

As a Toronto native with a long and varied history with the TIFF and festival / market world at large, I hope to bring a different perspective on how to approach TIFF to maximize the festival's impact. My goal is less a top-down lecture than an interactive forum, a discussion on how to embrace the needs and demands of the marketplace and make that marketplace work for you.

The workshops will be split into two parts, with the morning introductory session open to all interested filmmakers. The session will be an overview of the Toronto International Film Festival taking place between 10th and 20th September 2015, including a general overview of the festival, the background and mandate of this festival, as well as how to pitch and package your project for Toronto.

The session will also include an introduction to the ATFT and how its delegations work, as well as information on the DTI EMIA scheme that is used to finance the delegations to attend these markets. Filmmakers will learn how to apply for funding through the ATFT or as individual companies through the Individual Exhibitor scheme in order to be part of the South African Indies delegation to the Toronto Film Festival and other markets it attends.

The afternoon session is for TIFF delegates only and comprises of one on one meetings with Todd Brown, giving delegate the opportunity to discuss their projects and to learn the best ways to sell or find financing and distribution at the festival. Attendees will have this unique opportunity to ask Brown for advice, pitch their project and receive valuable feedback.
