The Mzansi Women's Film Festival (MWFF) celebrates Women's Month with its annual event that celebrates the work of women in film from South Africa and other parts of the world.
The MWFF has been hosted by Constitution Hill since its inception in 2014, having screenings at the historic Women's Gaol. The MWFF was established to create a reputable platform for women filmmakers to showcase their work and to create an annual networking opportunity for established women filmmakers and those new to the industry to engage, share their experiences, and build relationships with other filmmakers, as well as industry professionals. The MWFF further seeks to expose the quality and versatility of the work of women filmmakers in an effort to highlight their work as equal to their male counterparts in the industry.
The MWFF is proud to announce the addition of two new venues to the event. The MWFF has entered into partnership with the Westbury Youth Centre and the Wot-if Trust who will host screenings in the communities of Westbury and Diepsloot. The Westbury Youth Centre is a place of hope that strives to provide opportunities and empower the youth and community through skills development, multimedia, community outreach and education. Wot-if Trust operates from Diepsloot's Father Louis Blandel Centre, a place of hope for the Diepsloot community, which is dedicated to supporting small and emerging businesses, entrepreneurs, women's empowerment and youth development.
The MWFF opens on Friday, 5 August 2016 with the gripping film Alison, a triumphant true tale of monsters, miracles and hope. Directed by Uga Carlini and featuring the courageous Alison Botha, the MWFF proudly hosts Alison Botha and Uga Carlini at the Opening Night screening, which will be followed by a Q&A.
On the film headlining the MWFF, Botha said: I'm only just getting used to the fact that there is a movie out there about me (no, not at all, still not used to it) - and now I'm supposed to cope with the fact that it's the Opening Film of the inspiring, awesome Mzansi Women's Film Festival.'
The MWFF is pleased to announce the selection for the 3rd edition, which includes films from South Africa, Saint Lucia, the Dominican Republic, the DRC, Belgium, India, Iran, Tunisia, Spain, The Netherlands, Burkina Faso, Mexico and Zambia. Local filmmakers Lesego Lediga (Extinguish the Blaze), Stephina Zwane & Salamina Mosese (Love & Kwaito), Keyuri Naidoo (Because You're Black), Molatelo Mainetje (Block 5) and Jennifer Mostert (In Light of Is), are joined by Belgium filmmaker Katleen Brusselmans (Opa & P p ) in hosting Q&A sessions after the screening of their films.
The MWFF also hosts various panel discussions on issues relating to the industry. Some of the panels include talks on: exploring the barriers & opportunities for women in documentaries, and female producers and directors, decolonising South African cinema, product placement in film & television, the experiences of South African actresses in the industry, the power of film in music, women in animation, and making film and television work for audiences.
