Screen Producers Australia is delighted to announce that Phillip Adams AO has accepted an invitation to deliver the prestigious Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture on Monday, 17 November at 10.45am at the SCREEN FOREVER 2014 to be held at Melbourne's Crown Conference Centre.
Phillip Adams is arguably Australia's greatest public intellectual. For half a century he has been a powerhouse in the cultural world of this country, working as a broadcaster, filmmaker, social commentator, satirist and author of over 20 books. While his dynamic columns in major newspapers and magazines continue to provoke discussion, leading Prime Minister Gough Whitlam to describe him as Australia's most perceptive social critic, Adams is further celebrated as the godfather of the Australian film industry' for his remarkable contribution to the rejuvenation of the screen industry in Australia and his numerous features (The Adventures of Barry McKenzie, Don's Party, The Getting of Wisdom). Recognising Adams' 21 years as presenter of Radio National's Late Night Live' - during which he has interviewed over 15,000 of the world's most prominent politicians, thinkers and writers - Professor Robert Manne described Adams as perhaps the most remarkable broadcaster in the history of this country.

Across an incredible career, his creative vision has transformed the screen industry in this country, and his advice continues to be sought by governments and leading film institutions the world over. It will be a rare opportunity to hear from someone with such experience, intimate knowledge and perceptive insight into the Australian media industry.
Adams continues to influence public thinking and screen culture, having played a key role in the establishment of the Australia Council, the Australian Film Development Corporation, the Australian Film Commission, the South Australian Film Corporation, the Australian Film Finance Corporation and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. He was President of the Victorian Council for the Arts, Chairman of the National Australia Day Council, Film Australia, the Australian Film Institute and the Australian Film Commission and the Commission For The Future, and Foundation Chairman of the Australian Centre for Social Innovation (TASCI).
The extraordinary number of honours awarded to Adams include two Orders of Australia, the Senior ANZAC Fellowship, the 2006 Human Rights Medal from the Australian Government's Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission, the Golden Lion at Cannes, the Longford Award, a UN Media Prize, five Honorary Doctorates, an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, the Centennial Medal and the Responsibility in Journalism Award at New York University, and a minor planet' named in his honour by the International Astronomical Society.
Previous Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture speakers include Kim Williams AM, Dare Jennings, Peter Garrett, Lachlan Murdoch, Noel Pearson, Margaret Pomeranz, Harold Mitchell AC and Gillian Armstrong.
