Between Two Runs: A Julia Mancuso Chairlift Interview

In winter 2014, GoPro got to spend a few days on the slopes of Copper Mountain with GoPro athlete, Olympian and Wonder Woman-incarnate Julia Mancuso. Super-Jules - as she is called by her ski teammates - approaches the mountain with equal parts determination and joy in her pursuit to be the very best version of her self. This free spirit is as at home surfing the waves of Hawaii as she is speeding down steep runs. Be sure to watch her compete on the global stage at this weeks Alpine World Ski Championships happening in Beaver Creek, Colorado.

Back in Copper, we asked Julia for an impromptu GoPro News interview on a chairlift ride between two runs. Heres what she had to share:

GoPro: Julia, you were winning the Internet in 2014. How has GoPro enhanced your social game?

JM: GoPro inspires and encourages me to capture the everyday moments when I'm out traveling and on the hill and makes it fun to share it with my fans and the rest of the world!

GoPro: You travel and engage in a bunch of activities outside of skiing - what are some tips for capturing travel adventures?

JM: The biggest thing that Ive learned from traveling is to not be shy with your camera. A lot of time you'll be surprised that people want to engage and be a part of your travel experience. Sure, there are times when you don't want to have the camera out, but it's really about just going for it and capturing as many of those special moments as you can. Whether Im skiing or traveling, I like to bring the camera out and capture every angle of something. Maybe one day Ill do all POV and then the next day Ill use my camera for whats happening around me, like arriving at the mountain and getting my gear on, or exploring the nooks and crannies of the places I'm traveling.

GoPro: Do you have a favorite video mode and a go-to resolution frame rate?

JM: I use 1080/60 mostly because it's the most versatile, but I have been experimenting a little more in higher frame rates and play videos back in slow motion which has been really exciting, especially in ski racing; at the start it can be very dynamic with the pushing and snow flying.

GoPro: Was there a point where you really connected with your camera? An ah-ha moment using your GoPro?

JM: My ah-ha moment was when I learned how to use GoPro Studio and convert the files properly. Before I was just using iMovie or whatever and I didnt realize that there was a way to actually use GoPro software to convert the files so that you could get the frames per second right so you could slow down and speed up the footage.

GoPro: You have created and posted videos that get a ton of views. For you, what makes a good web video?

JM: For me there are two parts to a good web video. One is extreme action and being able to capture a good angle or something unique where the viewer can connect to the thrill of what we're doing. I also like to put humor in it! I think it's fun and people can connect to a video when you're doing something they wouldn't dare try like skiing in a Wonder Woman bathing suit or just having fun, and that comes out of not being afraid to take your camera out in situations where you might not be super comfortable with it.

GoPro: How would you describe both Ted (Ligety) and Lindsey (Vonn) as fellow GoPro athletes?

JM: Id describe Ted as Mr. Ski Racing Inspiration. He always has amazing angles and its cool to watch how he plays around with the camera. He definitely likes to show off how low he can get his hips to the ground... that's why he is famous in ski racing and why he wins all his GS races as well, so that's really cool. Lindsey is also pretty good at taking pictures with her dog [laughing]. But it's fun to be out in downhill with her too because we can play around and get different angles of each other.
