Get set to choose this year's tvebiomovies winners!
Tuesday 25th November 2014
Nine short films competing in the tvebiomovies 2014 competition go live today on YouTube signaling the start of a breakneck two month voting period to find the ultimate winners by 15 December. Two hundred and twenty five proposals from 61 countries were entered for tve'sannual green short film competition this year. From these proposals, nine finalists' films were selected and commissioned to go into production. The films were launched on 16 October at a special event at the Convention On Biological Diversity's biennial conference in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
This year's tvebiomovies finalists span the globe - from Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Colombia, Finland, India, Nepal, Spain, the USA and Zimbabwe. The filmmakers' ages range from two 19 year olds from Nepal - Sudan and Mohan - to 44 year old Ana Elizabeth from Spain. Their ambitious one-minute films - sometimes provocative, sometimes touching, sometimes disturbing - tackle a wide spectrum of green challenges, from renewable energy and the potential uses of bamboo to how to protect the planet that provides the life-support resources we all depend on. And they use an equally wide range of techniques and styles to get their messages across from animation and music, to drama and satire.
Now it's up to the global public to choose the winning films. With every view on YouTube notching up one vote, the winners will be the most watched films on tve's YouTube channel. With one victor in each of three categories, each film has a 1 in 3 chance of winning. The films which receive the highest number of YouTube views by 15 December 2014 will each receive a US$1,500 prize.
All nine films will also be screened by UNEP (the UN Environment Programme) at the UN Climate Conference COP 20 in Lima in December.
I applied to tvebiomovies because it was a good chance to test myself and - with the help of my film - to send a message about what is going to happen if we don't protect our planet, 29-year old Huseyn Qulamov emailed us from Azerbaijan of his film Greed'.
I made this film in order to show people that one person cannot save the planet and our environment alone, wrote 22-year old Brennan Carrithers from the USA, who made Be the Hero'. Saving the world is a goal that requires the help of each individual on Earth.
Winning this competition would mean that my message reached many individuals around the world and hopefully got them reflecting on simple ways to protect the environment for future generations, emailed Eric Ewoh Opu from Finland, about his film Save Some for the Children'. That, to me, would mean more than the cash prize.
Now in its fifth successful year, tvebiomovies 2014 invited aspiring and established film-makers to submit film proposals in four languages - French, Russian, Spanish, and English. Entries were submitted for three individual categories Renewable Energy'; Bamboo and Rattan'; and A World With a Future'. Each of the nine short-listed finalists was awarded US$300 to make their films over the last six weeks.
