The waste management company SWRD group is moving into the data destruction and IT recycling sector it has confirmed.

Figures from the StEP initiative, a coalition of UN organisations, governments and scientific bodies, suggest that 65.4 million tonnes of electronic waste, including unwanted IT equipment will clog the planet annually by 2017[1]. In an article published last year, the tech website Mashable calculated that the amount of discarded gadgets had already topped 49 million tonnes in 2012[2]. The amount of IT equipment not recycled is a growing area of concern for many UK companies as we are the planet's seventh worst offender, sending a colossal 1.4 million tonnes of e-waste to landfill each year.

Anthony Mayes, CEO from SWRD Group said, The amount of IT equipment not recycled has reached epidemic levels with smaller equipment such as keyboards, mice and internet routers routinely thrown out with the rest of the office rubbish when they stop working or are no longer needed, rather than properly recycled.
