OBERKOCHEN, 20.06.2013.
Professor Anne L'Huillier from Lund University in Sweden accepted the Carl Zeiss Research Award yesterday in Oberkochen. The award carries a cash prize of 25,000 euros.
The Swedish-French scientists was honored for her pioneering work in the field of high harmonic generation, which has laid the foundation for the generation of attosecond impulses and made crucial advances possible in the field of attosecond physics.
Movie from the interior of atoms
Attosecond impulses can be used, for example, to observe the movement of electrons in atoms or molecules in real-time. This plays a key role in understanding general physical phenomena or chemical reactions at the atomic level. Attosecond impulses can be used to build a type of video camera that allows scientists to record super time-lapse movies from the inside of atoms and molecules.
Anne LHullier expressed her thanks in receiving the award: "I am very honored to receive the Carl Zeiss Research Award. Basic research in optics provides the foundation for a wide range of key technologies. It is nice to see that this work is being acknowledged."
President and CEO Dr. Michael Kaschke congratulated the winner: "You have made a great contribution to progress in the field of optics and photonics." He also emphasized the close connection the company has with science. The Research Award, which was established to makr the 100-year anniversary of the Carl Zeiss Foundation, gives scientists a platform and makes their accomplishments known to the world.
Two Nobel Prize winners
The Carl Zeiss Research Award has been presented every two years since 1990 to honor outstanding achievements in international optical research. In 1987, the Carl Zeiss Foundation launched this award, and the Otto Schott Research Award, which honors outstanding achievements in glass research. The two awards are presented in alternate years. The Carl Zeiss Research Award is given by the Ernst Abbe Fund in the Stifterverband f r die Deutsche Wissen- schaft (a joint initiative of German industries to promote science and higher education).
The previous winners include subsequent Nobel Prize laureates Eric A. Cornell and Ahmed Zewail.
