The South African 3D computer-animated film Khumba produced by Triggerfish Animation Studios, is due for local release on 25 October by Indigenous Film Distribution.

Directed by Anthony Silverston, Khumba is the second animated feature produced by Triggerfish, following on the 2012 release of Adventures in Zambezia that grossed $29,694,525 at the international box office.

Khumba is the third local animated feature, and it s great to see that South African production companies are taking advantage of the global audience s love for animated films, says Helen Kuun, CEO of Indigenous Film Distribution.

She continues: Animated films typically outperform other types of movies at the box office. In an analysis of average box-office grosses by genre, industry analysts have found that animation consistently ranked second behind action movies in each of the last six years.

Kuun adds that it is encouraging to see DreamWorks, Disney and Pixar, which used to dominate the movie industry, are facing growing competition from other studios.

It opens up the market and signals that the industry is healthy that bodes well for top-end local animation companies like Triggerfish. It s a genre that is here to stay and is one of the most consistently performing. Animated movies are also appealing because they generate more revenue from DVD and toy sales than any other genre, Kuun concludes.

Featuring the voices of Liam Neeson (Taken, The Dark Knight Rises), Jake T Austin (Rio, Hotel for Dogs), AnnaSofia Robb (The Carrie Diaries, Race to Witch Mountain), Laurence Fishburne (Man of Steel, The Matrix) and Steve Buscemi (Monsters University, Boardwalk Empire), Khumba follows the journey of a half-striped zebra on a quest to prove his worth to his herd in the Great Karoo. After being blamed for the drought, Khumba embarks on a courageous adventure, meeting new friends and facing adversity along the way.
