As per a study conducted by Business Travel Show Europe (BTSE) 50% of the LGBTQI community has experienced some form of discrimination while travelling abroad. In light of Pride Month in South Africa, take a look at six queer-friendly travel destinations.

1. PORTUGAL According to Get Golden Visa, Portugal is one of the top travel destinations for the LGBTQI community. The European country legalised same-sex marriage in 2010 and also protects the rights of transgender and intersex people. Lisbon and Porto have the biggest queer scenes in the country.

2. GREECE Greece is known for its picturesque views, crystal blue waters and mouthwatering food. Although it is quite religious, Greece welcomes LGBTQI travellers with open arms. Mykonos is known for its incredible queer nightlife scene and LGBTQI -friendly beaches.

CANADA Canada is home to several LGBTQI events including Toronto Pride, Vancouver Pride, the Inside Out Film Festival and the Whistler Pride & Ski Festival. As per Out Adventures, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver have the most queer residents.

4. NEW ZEALAND In 1998, New Zealand made history as the first country to offer B&Bs, hotels and restaurants queer-friendly travel certifications. Over the years, the island country has also had a few queer government officials. Jacinda Arden, who has been in office since 2017, was the country's first prime minister to join a Pride parade.

5. SPAIN Nomadic Boys reports that Spain has been described as a trailblazer in terms of LGBTQI rights. The country legalised gay marriage in 2005 and is praised for its open minded society. Places like Ibiza and Barcelona are the standouts for queer travellers.

6. FRANCE France legalised gay marriage in 2013 and has allowed queer people to join the French army. Paris has a large queer scene with plenty of LGBTQI friendly bars and caf s. Smaller cities like Nice, Marseille and Montpelier also have bustling queer scenes.
