SMPTE Celebrates Launch of BBC Academy College of Technology

LONDON, U.K. - 11 Nov. 2013 - The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries, celebrated the launch of the British Broadcasting (BBC) Academy College of Technology, which preceded a packed SMPTE UK Section Meeting held at the BBC New Broadcasting House in London. SMPTE Executive Director, Barbara Lange, traveled to the UK for the occasion.

The Section Meeting featured Andy Bocking, acting technology controller at BBC News. Bocking explained the design of the BBC New Broadcasting House and discussed the challenges of news contributions over Internet Protocol (IP) and then delivering 5 continuous TV news outputs from a highly automated newsroom. Additionally, David Fitzgerald of Globelynx spoke briefly on the use of IP to connect experts from organizations worldwide that contribute to all broadcasters in the UK and beyond. SMPTE held an educational webcast featuring John Zubrzycki, principal technologist at BBC Research the following day.

"SMPTE is privileged to be at this launch of the BBC Academy website - and the College of Technology," said Lange. "SMPTE looks to grow its relationship with the BBC and the Academy both through our vibrant UK Section and also with International events such as IBC."

During the launch, Anne Morrison, Director of the BBC Academy outlined its three areas of Operation, which include production, journalism, and the newly launched College of Technology. Morrison explained the intent of the BBC is to serve and help train the widest media communities in the UK.

"The College of Technology aims to share best practice in broadcast technology, software engineering, product management, and user experience and design," said Andy Wilson, head of the College of Technology and SMPTE member. "The web site includes job profiles on typical industry roles, articles written by BBC and industry experts, as well as video case studies and master classes. It reflects different points of view, and helps to share and explore industry standards and practice."
