According to December 2023 viewership statistics, SABC 1 drama series Uzalo is still reigning supreme as South Africa's most-watched drama series with over 5.8 million views.

The drama series has undoubtedly managed to wow Mzansi with its interesting storyline capped with drama and thrills.

TOP FIVE MOST WATCHED SHOWS FOR DECEMBER 2023 IN SA Over the years, its star-studded cast has thrust it above the rest. However, despite fluctuations in viewership, South African soapies continue to enjoy significant support.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter popular entertainment commentator Jabulani MacDonald posted the latest figures from the Television Audience Measurement.

However, e.tv's drama series Scandal is now the second most watched soapie with 4.8 million viewers. Generations: The Legacy is ranked third with 4.7 million viewers.

Skeem Saam and House of Zwide are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively. Skeem Saam boasts 4.6 million viewers, while House of Zwide has 4.4 million viewers. Despite Uzalo being the most-watched drama series, its viewership has declined. At some point, it had over 8 million views.

REASONS BEHIND UZALO'S SUCCESS REVEALED Against the December statistics, Uzalo's communications specialist Nomfundo Zondo revealed why the drama series has remained relevant since its interception.

Zondo said, Uzalo features a gripping and relatable storyline that resonates with a broad audience, the show also has engaging narratives and dramatic twists. The show also focuses on portraying and addressing issues relevant to South African society, including cultural, social, and economic aspects.

The performance of the cast members, as well as their ability to bring characters to life, plays a crucial role in the show's popularity, added Zondo.
