Happy 6rd Birday, Tape Backup! by Jennifer Burl

Tape backup has always been a great friend to us at Iron Mountain. A reliable, cost-efficient form of media that has led backup and archiving for more than 50 years, tape continues to be a popular choice with conscientious consumers. If we sat down and had an interview with Tape, we imagine it would go something like this:

Iron Mountain: There's something we've been meaning to ask you, Tape.

Tape: Shoot.

Iron Mountain: Don't you think you're getting a bit, you know, old?

Tape: Shocking you would ask me that after all of these years of friendship, IRM, but I guess everyone needs a reminder sometimes. As I've said before, yes, I'm old. But, no, I'm not outdated.

Iron Mountain: What do you mean by that?

Tape: 63 years have gone by since IBM built my first iteration-the model 726-in 1952. Since that time, a lot has changed, but one thing remains the same: I offer amazing offsite data protection.

Iron Mountain: We do trust you to offer secure storage offline and offsite. But how does that stack up against disk? Or even the cloud?

Tape: I'm not saying they both don't have merits. In fact, we're all good buddies. I think it's best when we all work together to offer organizations hybrid data protection. It goes like this: you choose the best part of each of these three forms of storage, and you combine them to make what I like to refer to as Super Storage! -just without the red cape.

Iron Mountain: OK, that's interesting. We're definitely proponents of hybrid data protection. But you're still not as cool as an iPhone.

Tape: We're exciting in different ways. While I have the ability to securely keep data safe for up to 30 years, an iPhone is all about the here and now. It may be flashy, but I'm tried and true. Plus I'm your customers' best bet against cyber security threats because my data is stored offsite and offline. An iPhone can't say that.

Iron Mountain: Alright, Tape, you win again. You do still have a lot to offer our customers-especially when paired with cloud backup services as part of a hybrid strategy. Happy Birthday from all of us, and we look forward to saying that for many years to come.

Tape: Thanks! [Opens birthday present.] Another 10 GB of data? Really, guys?
