The news that filmmakers and those in filmmaking have been waiting for: The 2015 Oscar final nominations have been announced!
For Best Animated Feature, there were some surprises. Big Hero 6 (Disney), The Boxtrolls (Laika/Focus Features), and How to Train Your Dragon 2 (DreamWorks Animation) made the list, as expected. However, two foreign animations also were selected: Song of the Sea, a hand-drawn animated film from Ireland by Cartoon Saloon and directed by Tomm Moore, and Tale of the Princess Kaguya, a Japanese animated film from Studio Ghibli, done in its signature painterly style and directed by Isao Takahata. Surprisingly, the LEGO Movie was not on the list.
Making the cut for Best Visual Effects is Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. The epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, which did not woo audiences as expected, did not make the cut. But the big surprise was that the final installment of The Hobbit, The Battle of the Five Armies, from Peter Jackson and Weta, did not make the list.
As for the Animated Short Films, The Bigger Picture, The Dam Keeper, Feast, Me and My Moulton, and A Single Life were nominated.
For Best Picture, none of the Oscar nominees, like those up for BAFTAs, are big VFX films. The finalists are: American Sniper, Birdman, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Selma, The Theory of Everything, and Whiplash.
