A company's high-speed network pipes can readily transmit a few files to a cloud storage service, such as to Google Cloud Storage Nearline. In fact, many cloud backup services routinely transmit changed data to and from their customers' data centers this way. However, when an organization tries to send even 1 terabyte of data through those same pipes, the situation is vastly different. Companies need to consider how long it will take to complete such a transmission - depending on network speeds, even 1 terabyte could take minutes, hours or even days. It is also important to consider how much bandwidth the transmission will consume, whether day-to-day business functions could be slowed or halted and how much it will cost to transmit the data. While high-speed networks are readily available, they can still be expensive.
After factoring in these considerations, many organizations start to see the appeal of cloud seeding. Companies can rid themselves of cost, time and productivity concerns by using a designated third-party service to streamline large-scale data migration to the cloud.
