Sitting aboard Spain's Alta Velocidad Espa ola (AVE) high speed train enjoying soda and sandwiches while the landscape whizzes by at 186 miles per hour, there would seem to be no more comfortable or convenient way to travel. But no journey would be truly complete without a comprehensive connected entertainment service.
That's why Telef nica chose NAGRA's OpenTV Suite to power and secure its new PlayRenfe solution, which gives AVE travellers access to the Telef nica Movistar pay-TV service over Wi-Fi in the high-speed trains. A first in continental Europe, PlayRenfe enables passengers to enjoy live TV and a wide catalogue of films, series and music through their mobile devices while they travel. By bringing secured OTT TV services to next generation train travel, NAGRA and Telef nica are taking the concept of multiscreen TV further than even industry experts predicted.
NAGRA has a successful track record working with Telef nica, one of the world's largest telecommunications companies, to help them deliver a richer, more interactive TV experience. In March 2015, the NAGRA OpenTV Suite (then called MediaLive) enabled Telef nica-owned Canal Spain to reach record viewing levels on its Movistar (previously called Yomvi) OTT TV platform. Marking a major milestone for Movistar , the El Clasico football match between Real Madrid and Barcelona was viewed by an estimated half a million people on more than 376,000 devices, a 29 percent increase over the same period the previous year. And throughout Movistar 's rapid growth, NAGRA's OpenTV Suite has been there every step of the way, helping the service reach more than one million active devices for the first time back in April 2014.
Enabling a personalised user experience across all devices, the NAGRA OpenTV Suite includes advanced features such as multi-language audio tracks, subtitles, and recommendations to ensure all subscribers get the most value out of their premium TV channel line-up and content catalogue.
Yet to be truly successful, telco operators must improve the reach and richness of their TV services and build a critical mass of viewers that can easily connect to the content they love. The NAGRA OpenTV Platform, a component of the OpenTV Suite, is designed to help them do just that by providing a multiscreen service management platform that can securely deliver content to multiple users, across multiple networks, on all types of media devices.
With its ground-breaking work on PlayRenfe, NAGRA is helping usher in a new era in video consumption. But this is just the beginning for OTT TV which is gaining more traction with viewers and is available on more devices than ever before. With demand rising, OTT TV will be a key driver for telcos over the next few years.
