Matthews Studio Equipment has just signed an agreement with Pollysystem to become the exclusive distributor for their new Polly Dolly in both the Americas and Asia. What excites us about the Polly Dolly is not just the quality of the system, but the wide range of cameras it serves, says Robert Kulesh, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Matthews Studio Equipment. Polly Dolly can handle anything from a DSLR camera to an ALEXA and more.
Polly is an ultra-compact, portable and flexible solution for smooth tracking captured with today's modern camera systems - with all the capabilities of larger equipment. Because it is so compact and easy to use, tracking shots that would once require at least one assistant or even a motion control system can now be executed by just one person and in almost no prep time.
The idea came up during a video production with lots of equipment and a large dolly system, explains designer Thomas Kress who worked with partner Hans-Peter, a precision engineer for formula one racing, on the design. I wished I had a professional system with the behavior of a large system in a compact package - which could run without tracks and with stable and constant movements. I didn't want a motorized dolly because of the need for extra batteries so I came up with the thought of a flywheel drive.
While well placed in the German market, Pollysystem realized that they needed to reach out for representation internationally. We met Tyler Phillips at NAB 2014, and were introduced to Robert Kulesh and the Matthews team. We found them to be an excellent company with a wide variety of products well represented in North America, Middle America, South America and Asia. The partnership felt right.
Kulesh immediately saw the potential of this new system. The flywheel gear allows for extra smooth movement on every flat ground, Kulesh explains. Polly Dolly has created a flywheel made of high-grade steel. Their new dis-engageable gear simultaneously accumulates the kinetic energy and stabilizes the movement. Mount a camera and a video-head on the top for constant and ultra-slow tracking shots with only a fingertip to guide the shot. With the scale on the flywheel, you can get super-precise stop motion shots as well.
Polly Dolly basic is only 8 (200mm) by 8 (200mm) by 11 (280mm) and weights only 15 lbs (7kg).
Add the Polly-Arm and Polly Dolly's possibilities are extended significantly. The arm adjusts vertically, horizontally, and is rotatable in all directions - putting the camera within a range of approximately 3.3' (1 meter). The camera can be mounted directly to the arm or by a variety of connection places. The removable rod applies counterbalance like sandbags or other weights. Total additional weight to package is 9 lbs (4 kg). If needed, there is an optional track for uneven terrain.
