It was all happening at the Durban International Film Festival

The National Film and Video Foundation, an Agency of the Department of Arts and Culture was partner to the Durban International Film Festival which closed last week in Durban.

The atmosphere and energy displayed by delegates including local creatives and talent, our global visitors and fellow filmmakers from the rest of our African continent was amazing. Every workshop, forum and meeting room on a daily basis was packed by filmmakers eager to tell their stories, to collaborate and to learn more about their craft. The audiences were spoilt for choice given the plethora of brilliant, entertaining films offered at the festival.

The NFVF was also ensuring that delegates understand its mandate by sharing its 2014/15 achievements, results from its research projects as well as honing skills through masterclass programmes. The festival commenced with the screening of NFVF Slate Funding project, Ayanda, which received great reviews locally and beyond our shores. The foundation held its Industry session, which was graced by the presence of the Department of Arts and Culture Director General Mr. Vuyo Jack. Mr Jack joined the NFVF Council Chairperson Ms. Mmabatho Ramagoshi and CEO Ms. Zama Mkosi on the panel, and emphasised that Authenticity of our stories as well as social cohesion are important in the telling of our stories. The event was followed by Audience Research presentation by Devnomics CEO Mr. Kola. The results of the research can be downloaded from the NFVF website www.nfvf.co.za.

In her efforts to spearhead the local film industry discussion, Ms Mkosi hosted CEOs from various public and private sector companies to a Roundtable Discussion. The discussions were aimed at introducing the CEOs to the film industry as well as creating awareness of the role the industry plays in the countrys economic growth. As our industry continues to thrive, the demand for funding, training of filmmakers and marketing of our films also grows. As leaders in film we constantly look at ways of addressing this challenge, and the meeting assisted us in mapping the way forward as we craft critical strategies, says Ms. Mkosi.
