Its your standard tale; boy meets girl. Except, thanks to Bare Films Jim Weedon, this rendition of the timeless storyline takes it to a new extreme. SyFy have launched the channel promo Boy Meets Girl and its pretty epic.
Finish Flame Artist Judy Roberts worked on the highly collaborative project which unsurprisingly for the boy-meets-girl clich takes us through a number of ups and downs and twists and turns.
Discussing the project, Judy comments We worked very closely with the Director Jim Weedon at Bare Films and the agency from an early pre-production stage, helping to conceptualise ideas for the light world and the dark world, and working in depth on animation tests for light and transition effects.
Its an extensively post-heavy minute-long film, packed with alien life-forms and supernatural figures. Paul Harrison provided the grade, Kayley Fernandes the Nuke and CG work was completed by Harin Hirani and Alaric Holberton.
Judy says We mocked up some rough matte painting prior to the shoot, and once they were approved by the client they became the reference for the shoot. Skeleton floors and backgrounds were build out of the appropriate tones and materials, and all the final backgrounds were built and composited in Flame after.
During the course of the post, Finish collaborated with Jim to design the crystal light effect, which was part CGI and part 2D elements. We also worked carefully on the opening station scene where deconstructed the villain to give him an other-worldly feel. We added butterflies designed by our 3D team, who also designed and built the wings for our hero in the white world scenes.
Alaric comments Although they unfortunately weren't used in the final cut, I had fun looking at aurora borealis. They're a unique, beautiful effect and it was interesting recreating that in a procedural and mathematical way; this allowed for unlimited variations for however we wanted them to look.
Judy adds It was great be so creatively involved in such an in-depth and original project.
