In the live-sports-video industry, the future is bright. Our series SVG Students To Watch highlights the next generation of live-sports-production professionals. Across campuses nationwide, students are playing a pivotal role in bringing their schools' games to fans - from running cameras and graphics to sitting in the producer's or director's chair and everything in between. This series shines a light on the young talent making an impact today and preparing to shape the future of sports-video production.
Alex Albert
College: Texas A&M University
Academic Year: May 2026 Graduate
Hometown: Spring, TX
Roles: Creative Content Shooter and Editor
What drew you to live sports production, and how did you get started?
I started editing sports videos as a hobby in my free time. Growing up, I loved watching and playing sports and eventually developed an interest in video editing. Naturally, I became interested in sports-video production. I always wanted to work in sports in some capacity, and, over time, I realized that I wanted to continue trying to pursue a career in sports postproduction.
Albert was the lead creative-video shooter for Texas A&M men's basketball this past season, doing so for the athletic department's award-winning video division, 12th Man Productions. Were there any aha moments when you realized you really loved a particular role, like directing, replay, or graphics?
I think an aha moment for me when I realized I loved sports postproduction was simply when I got to Texas A&M and had the opportunity to film games and edit videos. Before that, video editing was something I did purely as a hobby whenever I had free time, and I had never filmed live games myself. When I got the opportunity to work in sports postproduction, I realized not only that I had a lot of potential but that I truly loved it as more than a hobby, as something I wanted to turn into my career.
What has been your favorite project or game that you've worked on, and why?
There are so many games that I have loved to capture, but I think my favorite game I've worked was the Texas A&M vs. Saint Mary's First Round March Madness game this year. Filming a March Madness game on the floor of an NBA arena was a dream bucket-list item for me, so getting the opportunity was special. It was also a huge win for the Texas A&M basketball team in a year when many thought winning a tournament game wouldn't be possible for the team. Being able to capture the moment and all the reactions made it unforgettable.
What's the most challenging aspect of working in live sports production as a student?
I think the most challenging aspect is maintaining the balance between school and work. When you love working in sports production and know you want to do it as a career, it's easy to want to dedicate all your time to that. Sports production and schoolwork can each take up a lot of your time, so you have to figure out a strategy that works for you to be able to succeed in both.
A highlight of Albert's year was shooting and editing video for the Aggies' victory in the First Round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in March. Filming a March Madness game on the floor of an NBA arena, he says, was a dream bucket-list item for me. What are your career aspirations after graduation?
I would like to stay in sports postproduction in a role similar to what I am doing now, at least for a while. I hope to stay around college basketball specifically, but I am also open to other sports as well. Eventually, I would like to work my way up to doing sports production for either a professional sports team or a freelance company.
What advice would you give to your freshman self?
The advice I would give would be enjoy the moment. The journey to get to the point I am at now has been very fun and full of many special moments, but it hasn't always been easy.
It's easy to get caught up in things not going as planned or not progressing as fast as you want. Sometimes, it's hard to step back in the moment and realize how blessed you are to have the opportunity to have a job where you get to experience so many special moments. Taking time to appreciate each moment is important, as they all help shape who you are today.
Looking back, I'm grateful for every experience I've had along the way. Each one has taught me something new or helped me grow in a different aspect of this field.
If you run video production at a college athletic department and would like to recommend a standout student from your crew to be featured in SVG Students To Watch, please email SVG Director of Digital Brandon Costa at [email protected].
