Monday 25th November 2013
Life Apps, tves innovative, five-part series on apps for development broadcasts globally on Al Jazeera from 26 November.
With an estimated six billion mobile subscriptions globally, it's now well and truly a cell-phone world. Whats more the smart phone revolution (a billion hand sets sold in 2013) is putting mobile internet and apps in peoples pockets across the world. But can mobile technology help the three billion people living in poverty on less than US$2 a day? The rural and urban poor, isolated communities and indigenous people? To find out we asked app developers in Africa, Asia and Latin America to visit poor and marginalised communities, find out what they wanted and needed and then try to design an app that could help improve their lives. The result is Life Apps, a groundbreaking series, produced by tve working with production partners in Africa, Asia and Latin America and now broadcasting globally on Al Jazeera. The films deliver a surprising perspective on technology and development, from the Himba nomads in remote northern Namibia who use cell phones but can't read or write, to William, the Kenyan subsistence farmer who realises that he is missing out on market opportunities.
