Digital One arrives in Norern Ireland

Assembled journalists, politicians and radio industry customers together with the Northern Ireland Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure, Car l N Chuil n AM, and former Eurovision Song Contest winner for Ireland, Dana, switched on the signal, bringing 14 radio stations to nearly 80% of households in Northern Ireland, ten of them for the first time on DAB.

We are proud to support the development of digital radio throughout the UK and are delighted at extending our national digital radio network to Northern Ireland.

The switch-on of six new DAB digital radio transmitters at Divis, Carnmoney Hill, Londonderry, Brougher Mountain, Strabane and Limavady means that 1.4 million listeners can now enjoy a full variety of different stations with rock, pop, dance, jazz, classical and decade stations, in addition to religious and sports stations. Commentary for Premier League matches will be broadcast in Northern Ireland on DAB on both talkSPORT and Absolute Radio, in addition to BBC Radio 5 Live.

Minister Car l N Chuil n praised the importance of radio telling the assembled guests:

This is a fantastic boost for radio listeners across the North. The ability to tune into this wide range of radio stations will improve radio coverage and enable almost 80% of households and 62% of the main road network to have access to content that they previously would not have had before. Radio is a hugely important communications medium and a lifeline for many people. This is a good day for fans of radio.

The full 14 DAB station line-up includes Absolute Radio, Absolute Radio 80s, Absolute Radio 90s, Smooth Radio, Smooth 70s, Jazz FM, Planet Rock, Team Rock, BFBS and Premier Christian Radio; it will also expand the availability of Classic FM, talkSPORT, Kiss and UCB. Listeners in Northern Ireland will now be able to listen to a total of 31 DAB digital radio stations including 11 BBC stations such as BBC Radio Ulster and 6 commercial radio stations.
