What can Earth Day Selfies Do to Help Our Planet?

I just read an article about an idea developed by NASA to engage everyone on the planet in promoting Earth Day, April 22, 2014. NASA is marking this the big year for Earth science with a campaign called Earth Right Now, and as part of this campaign the agency is asking for our help. You may not know that there are 17 Earth-observing missions orbiting our home planet right now and five more launching this year NASA studies Earth's atmosphere, land and oceans in all their complexity.

However, what I find really fascinating is for all its data gathering from space, NASA wants to record images of Earth from the ground with their Global Selfie Event. They are asking citizen's to take selfies outside and to show a sign, words written in the sand, spelled out with rocks to identify our location mountains, parks, the sky, rivers, lakes wherever we are. This crowd-sourced collection of snapshots of the people of Earth will be used to create one unique mosaic of the Blue Marble - our earth. Great way to increase engagement, humanize these scientific efforts while increasing awareness of the important work NASA is doing.
