DHD SX2 and XS3 Audio System Selected for Broadcast Media...

UK-based broadcast engineer Andrew Kemp has chosen a dhd.audio SX2 and XS3 as the basis of a transportable media-training resource. With a quarter-century of experience in linear and non-linear TV playout, video-on-demand, post-production, asset management, logistics and media workflow, he is also a volunteer supporter enabling young people to gain broadcast-related proficiency.

The system we have chosen comprises a 10-fader SX2 audio mixer and XS3 processing core, plus a Dante multichannel audio-over-IP interface, Andrew Kemp comments. We also selected DHDs Views App which allows the mixer controls to be supervised and adjusted on a touchscreen tablet or computer screen. The result is very robust, highly versatile and has an exceptionally easy learning curve. It is also compact and easy to transport for deployment at outdoor events. Our first project with the new mixer was at the Surrey Scouts SCRAM 2026 event in Walton-on-Thames. The SX2 enabled young scout leaders to gain experience in audio media production. It also allowed cub scouts and brownies to gain confidence in live audio presentation, in this case with everything relayed on a site-wide public-address system. The mixer proved an ideal training resource and encouraged the user team to propose ideas for future events.

The SX2 is ideally designed for todays broadcast workflow, augmented by easy modular and software-based expandability.

DHD's SX2 audio mixer is based on a 4-fader central panel plus an optional number of expansion modules. Each SX2 module can be used standalone or combined with others to create a single console. The central panel gives access to the most important audio inputs and outputs. A microphone input and headphone output are also included. Loudspeakers can be connected directly. The expansion panel incorporates 6 motorised faders and allows the addition of a second layer accommodating up to 16 channels. Central and fader panels each incorporate a 10.1-inch multitouch display showing relevant configuration and operating parameters. SX2 features can be extended simply by adding optional license codes to the digital processing core. This allows extra faders, busses and clean-feeds. Functions such as loudness metering, profanity delay and talkback to other DHD mixers are also supported.

The DHD XS3 is a streamlined IP core designed to make every studio setup easy to deploy and maintain. It combines essential mixing and routing capabilities with built-in Dante 4 4, USB audio and 8 APC ports for surfaces and I/O, all in 1U. Simplified configuration gets users get on air quickly. More advanced settings can be selected using DHD's Toolbox optional configuration software. Software licenses and AES67 or Dante IPx modules scale the system as workflow demands grow.
