GoPro Celebrates its Heritage at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma

San Mateo, CA (August 27th, 2013) - The vineyards sprawled across the rolling hills of Wine Country as GoPro, maker of the world's most versatile camera and enabler of today's most engaging user-generated content, descended upon Sonoma Raceway this past weekend for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma IndyCar race, treating fans, family, and media to an incredible weekend at the track.

Deeply rooted in both the Northern California locale and the sport of racing, GoPro celebrated its origins with a weekend of premier auto racing in the land of tannins. The entire GoPro family came out to support the Grand Prix of Sonoma, congregating on the lawn in between Turn One and Turn Two of the dynamic race circuit. With two race simulators, food and drinks, Ping-Pong, and live telecast of the race, the GoPro hospitality provided plenty of comfort and fun for family and friends. And while the green flag didn't wave to start the IndyCar race until Sunday afternoon, the track purveyed plenty of action throughout the weekend.

Taking a break from the captain's chair, GoPro CEO Nicholas Woodman pulled double duty at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma as both Grand Marshal of the IndyCar race, and racer in the Formula Car Challenge series. Before actually waving the green flag as part of his Grand Marshal responsibilities, Woodman put his GoPro Pro Formula Mazda on the podium, scoring third place in the Formula Car Challenge. With little time to prepare or train, our founder and CEO still managed to qualify in third, just 1/10th of a second out of second place. With a solid start position on the grid, Woodman clicked off consistent laps from start to finish, controlling the third place spot and staking claim to his step on the podium in the Pro Formula class. As well, GoPro athlete and X Games powerhouse Bucky Lasek joined Woodman on the circuit, scoring his own spot on the podium in the Formula Mazda class.

Shortly after the final checkered flag flew for racing on Saturday, which included the Formula Car Challenge, World Challenge, and Maserati World Series, GoPro athlete and NorCal local Tyler McQuarrie commandeered the racetrack for a few hot laps in his Formula DRIFT car. He welcomed members of the media for a ride-along of DRIFT through an entire lap of the Sonoma Raceway. Needless to say, there were bright smiles and white knuckles. And in typical fashion, the GoPro Media Team was on hand with a wealth of cameras to document all of the on-track and in-car antics.

The excitement culminated on Sunday, starting with the GoPro Bomb Squad jumping into the track to ignite the crowd. From there, the Grand Marshal, Nick Woodman, took the reigns of the Grand Prix. With some wheel time under his belt, a third-place finish on his scoring sheet, and his entire team in attendance to support, Woodman ushered the elite IndyCar racers past the start line with the green flag, officially igniting the 85-lap chase for the checkered flag.
