The 16th annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) are set to take place on Friday 2 September and Saturday 3 September. This year, several of Mzansi's most popular television series and films including Dam, How to Ruin Christmas and 1Magic soapie, The River, are up for some major awards.

Ahead of the two-day affair, here is everything you need to know about the SAFTAs.

THE NOMINEES Leading the SAFTAs 16 soapie and telenovela pack is 1Magic's telenovela, The River. The much-loved telenovela has bagged nominations in the wardrobe, make-up and hairstyling and sound categories. Tsholofelo Matshaba and Sindi Dlathu are up for Best Actress in a Telenovela and The River is also up for Best Telenovela.

Streaming giant Netflix stands tall with a whopping 16 nominations for the second season of How to Ruin Christmas. The late Busi Lurayi, who played the charismatic role of Tumi Sello, is nominated for a posthumous SAFTA in the Best Actress in a TV comedy category.
Showmax's Dam and Tali's Baby Diary both scored 11 nominations.

WHO WILL BE HOSTING THE AWARDS The SAFTAs will take place over two evenings with the Craft Awards kicking off on Friday 2 September. The Craft Awards honour the creatives behind the camera. The first evening will be hosted by media personalities Smash Afrika and Candice Modiselle.
On Saturday 3 September, media personality Khutso Theledi and Expresso host Ryle De Monrny will join Mpho Popps on stage for the main event.
Before the main event kicks off, Mzansi's A-listers will be walking down the red carpet looking fabulous. Television presenters Palesa Tembe and Lasizwe Dambuza will be hosting the red carpet event.

WHERE CAN MZANSI WATCH THE SAFTAS? The Craft Awards on 2 September will be streamed live on the SAFTAs YouTube channel at 19:00.
The main awards show on 3 September will also be streamed live on YouTube and will be broadcast on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) at 19:00. Before the main show kicks off, the red carpet will take place from 18:30.
